Social Model of Disability in Wales – Join the Conversation

The Welsh Government’s new framework ‘Action on Disability: The Right to Independent Living’ was issued for consultation on the 22 October 2018 and closed on the 18 January 2019.  Consultation responses are currently being analysed with a view to publishing the final version in summer 2019. The framework is underpinned by the Social Model of Disability and contains a commitment to increase understanding of the Social Model across Welsh Government and beyond; and to ensure it is reflected widely in our policies and programmes.

Following on from the consultation, Welsh Government, in partnership with Disability Wales, are running 3 half-day workshops across Wales to engage people in the Social Model conversation.  The workshops will include discussions on the following:

  • Where does the Social Model come from and why is it important?
  • How does the Social Model empower disabled people?
  • What does the Social Model look like in practice?
  • Examples of where the Social Model has been used successfully.
  • What are the challenges and barriers preventing further implementation?
  • How can we work together to ensure the Social Model is reflected more widely in society?
