This seminar examines the future for the health and social care workforce in Wales.

Discussion will focus on the workforce strategy and long term workforce planning, including in the context of Brexit.

The seminar takes places in light of the Parliamentary Review of Health and Social Care in Wales, and the Welsh Government’s Healthier Wales plan, which includes the setting up of a new Workforce Strategy for Health and Social Care in Wales.

With a draft Workforce Strategy expected to be released before the summer the seminar will be an opportunity to discuss priorities for its final version expected later in the year.

The agenda includes keynote addresses from Julie Rogers, Deputy Chief Executive, HEIW and Charlie Massey, Chief Executive, General Medical Council, and places at this conference have already been reserved by senior officials from the Welsh Government; Healthcare Inspectorate Wales; Wales Audit Office and HSE.

In focusing on the priorities for the strategy, attendees will consider joint regional workforce planning, recruitment and retention, expanding generalist skills and modelling for future needs, as well as on making staff feel valued with measures including career support, multi-professional learning opportunities and further provisions aimed at enabling staff to deliver the best care possible.

We also expect discussion on the impact of the Healthier Wales new ‘seamless’ models of health and care on patient and staff wellbeing, and on creating an attractive environment and culture for potential new staff to start work in Wales.

Further sessions will look at the steps needed to implement the Workforce Strategy’s goals, and the proposed new leadership competency framework and development programmes designed to provide strong governance to deliver the strategy.

The agenda also looks at plans for creating a flexible and learning workforce, taking into account changing demographics and the move to more integrated care, as well as making the NHS Wales an exemplar employer in creating and supporting an engaged and healthy workforce.

Delegates will also review the implementation of the Nurse Staffing Levels Wales Act at the one year mark – assessing its contribution to improved patient safety, whether the numbers of nurses better matches the workload, and the further steps that can be taken to ensure health boards fulfil their duties under the Act.

They will also consider the role of inspection in overseeing the health workforce -focusing on widening access, improving skills, developing careers and empowering service providers.
