Open Standards make it easier for systems to work together and exchange data. They can help public services to integrate, collaborate and take a long term view of procurement and public service delivery. Information Technology departments across public services have traditionally purchased proprietary software. The obscure output formats from these systems often result in organisations being locked-in to contracts. These formats also make it difficult for systems to integrate, which will be vital as public services come together under the auspices of Public Service Boards.
