Our Stories: Keeping Volunteering in the Family

Situated inside Butetown Community Centre, a quiet revolution is taking place. C3SC is delighted to share Dubi and Delmwa’s inspiring story into volunteering as husband and wife in the Centre, in two different roles, for two different third sector organisations. Read on as we introduce their roles and what volunteering has brought to both individuals:

Dubi serves as Management Committee Treasurer at Butetown Community Centre – also home to C3SC as our offices are situated on the first floor. Dubi’s days when he volunteering at the Centre are shaped by spreadsheets, financial forecasts, and monthly reports that help steer the organisation’s strategic direction. Delmwa, meanwhile, is involved in a similarly important role at Cardiff Third Sector Council (C3SC), working across admin and finance. In addition, her volunteering has also seen her sit in as a panel judge for the Cardiff Volunteer Awards 2025, and participating in workshops.

When asked what spurred their desire to volunteer, for both it was rooted in something deeper than filling spare time. Dubi spoke of a genuine desire to serve his community and humanity at large, while also acknowledging the practical value of building experience and relationships in the UK. Delmwa’s motivation was similarly grounded – a wish to give back to society, contribute to economic development, and grow professionally in her chosen field. What neither could have fully anticipated was just how much they would receive in return.

“It has been very interesting, and I have enjoyed every part of the work,” says Dubi, who highlights the camaraderie of the office environment as a particular highlight. For Delmwa, the rewards have been equally personal – a sense of fulfilment, new friendships, and an expanding sense of what she is capable of. Her path to C3SC was, by her own admission, largely accidental. “It happened coincidentally,” she recalls, “but when I discovered the organisation, I felt so happy and saw it as part of our family.”

With volunteering having become something of a family affair, Dubi commented, “We are very pleased with the volunteer work and the warm reception we received throughout the building. We feel truly privileged to be part of this large family. The experience has been overwhelming.”

Though Dubi and Delmwa found their way to volunteering through different paths, it’s undeniable that both have arrived at the same truth: that giving back your time gives back far more than you expect. Between them, they bring an infectious enthusiasm for community life in one building, and we’re delighted to share their story today to inspire all generations. With that, we conclude this month’s story with one last quote from Dubi, “You might wonder if you’ll truly make a difference. The truth is that your time, presence, and kindness can mean much more to someone else than you realise.
