Sugar Taxes and Healthier Food Choices
International evidence suggests that introducing taxes on unhealthy foods and sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) can significantly reduce their purchase and consumption. A recent report by Public Health Wales, Fiscal Levers to Address Obesity, explores how financial policies, such as taxes and subsidies, can promote healthier diets.
Currently, 115 countries have implemented a sugar tax on SSBs, with 41 countries introducing food taxes nationally. The report highlights the importance of well-designed fiscal policies to ensure effective and sustainable implementation.
Ilona Johnson, Consultant in Health Improvement at Public Health Wales, emphasises the need to explore fiscal measures to support healthier diets in Wales, learning from international experiences.
