I am writing to remind you of your invitation to the above seminar, which will examine the future for cancer care in Wales, with the https://gov.wales/topics/health/nhswales/plans/cancer-plan/?lang=en“>Wales Cancer Delivery Plan due to conclude next year.

Taking place at an important stage in the delivery of the Plan itself, delegates will examine the lessons learnt from its implementation.

The conference also discusses the introduction of the Single Suspected Cancer Pathway – which aims to ensure all patients begin treatment within 62 days of the point of suspicion.

As we expect discussion relevant to charities – with keynote addresses from Professor Tom Crosby, Medical Director, Wales Cancer Network; Andy Glyde, Public Affairs Manager, Cancer Research UK and Dr Lee Campbell, Scientific Projects and Communications Manager, Cancer Research Wales – we thought this might be of interest.

Next steps for Wales Cancer Delivery Plan and policy going forward

Delegates will assess the options for policy post-2020, with discussion expected on the potential development of a new plan and integration into wider policy documents such as https://gov.wales/topics/health/publications/healthier-wales/?lang=en“>Healthier Wales.

Issues for consideration include how any strategy can support improvement in treatment, care and resource-efficiency looking at approaches such as better use of data, diagnostic screening and biosimilars, as well as how services can be aligned with the latest research and the provision of a holistic approach to care.

Further sessions look forward to implementation of the Delivery Plan in the remainder of its timeframe, and opportunities for it to be refreshed and refined to bring it into line with latest thinking.

Implementation of the Single Suspected Cancer Pathway

Delegates will also look at the implementation of the Single Suspected Cancer Pathway as it begins, looking at the priorities for diagnostic services, patient involvement, seamless movement through the pathway, the role of research, and optimising performance.

We expect key discussion on how to understand what the new measurement means, how the new waiting time targets will be used to evaluate and improve performance, and whether it will lead to more early stage diagnoses.

Workforce capabilities and infrastructure development

Attendees will consider workforce capabilities, especially around diagnostic gaps, and the potential impact of training non-specialists and approaches to improving triage to help plug these gaps. It comes as the recent workforce report from the Royal College of Radiologists highlights the falling numbers of clinical oncologists, with Wales being especially adversely affected.

IT, patient data and wider infrastructure needs

They will look at improving IT services and the interfaces between primary and secondary care – looking at digitisation of patient data, seeking to ensure effective collaboration and a seamless system for patients – as well as the broader infrastructure needed to meet the waiting times goal.

Public health and awareness

Further sessions focus on early diagnosis, prevention and public health policy including options for achieving a better understanding of health-seeking behaviours – as well as for improving self-reporting of symptoms and reaching out to forgotten and hidden groups with appropriate targeting of awareness strategies.

The agenda also considers the role of longer term health strategies, especially around obesity, exercise and smoking, to create a culture change that will reduce incidents of cancer.

• Next steps for the Cancer Delivery Plan – improving treatments, meeting needs and looking forward to 2020;
• The role of prevention and early diagnosis in reducing cancer deaths;
• Designing and delivering cancer pathways – co-production and the role of research; and
• Delivering the Single Suspected Cancer Pathway – providing the resources and leadership to meet the new waiting times.

Networking

Policy Forum for Wales seminars present an opportunity to engage with key policymakers and other interested parties, and are CPD certified (more details). Places have been reserved by officials from the Welsh Government. Also due to attend are representatives from Cancer Research UK; Cancer Research Wales; Cancer52; MSD; Ovarian Cancer Action; Proton Partners International; Rutherford Cancer Centre South Wales; Rutherford Innovations and Velindre NHS Trust.

Typically, attendees at our seminars are a senior and informed group numbering 120, including Members of the National Assembly for Wales and senior officials from the Welsh Government, regulators and other agencies, trade unions, local authorities, health boards, allied health professionals, royal colleges, lawyers, consultancies, patient groups, specialist academics and charities, together with reporters from the national and trade press based in Wales and elsewhere.

Output and About Us

A key output of the seminar will be a transcript of the proceedings, sent out around 12 working days after the event to all attendees and a wider group of Ministers and officials in the Wales Office and Welsh Government departments affected by the issues; as well as Assembly Members with a special interest in the subject. It will also be made available more widely. This document will include transcripts of all speeches and questions and answers sessions from the day, along with access to PowerPoint presentations, speakers’ biographies, an attendee list, an agenda, sponsor information, as well as any subsequent press coverage of the day and any articles or comment pieces submitted by delegates. It is made available subject to strict restrictions on public use, and is intended to provide timely information for interested parties who are unable to attend on the day.

All delegates will receive complimentary PDF copies and are invited to contribute to the content.

• Concessionary rate places for small charities, unfunded individuals and those in similar circumstances are £85 plus VAT. Please be sure to apply for this at the time of booking.

• Copies of the briefing document, including full transcripts of all speeches and the questions and comments sessions and further articles from interested parties, will be available approximately 12 days after the event for £95 plus VAT;
• Concessionary rate: £50 plus VAT.
