International Women’s Day is celebrated around the world every year on 8th March, and we are pleased to highlight the voluntary groups in Cardiff supporting the empowerment, health and wellbeing of women and girls. This month, we bring to your attention one member group, Love Your Period, who were Winners of the Youth Led Grant Project of the Year award at the Cardiff Volunteer Awards 2025. The group, who offer a space for education about women’s health and nurturing body positivity, joined us at our most recent Annual General Meeting and Members’ Forum where our Marketing Officer Judy caught up with Molly Fenton, Founder of Love Your Period.
The project’s momentous win at the C3SC annual awards comes after its successful application to the Cardiff Youth Led Grant 2024/25 funding round to expand its role and reach more people via a collaboration with Days for Girls UK. Molly told us, ‘We applied for the (Youth led) grant to continue our partnership with Days for Girls UK Barry branch, covering Wales in our new project ‘Project Mislif Hapus’ (Happy Period Project). The project is now almost a year old and we have given out over 1000 hybrid kits with education and instructions to many communities across Wales’.
Molly’s project supports period dignity and offers a means of navigating period poverty. The Love Your Period campaign was born out of Molly’s lived experience as she recognised a space was missing where girls and women could be heard and understood when it came to matters about their health and wellbeing. The project has since opened conversations surrounding the topic in schools, and has provided opportunities where Molly has been able to advocate and represent the voice of hundreds of young people at national roundtables where decision-making takes place. Aside from campaign work, the project supports the delivery of free period products and education, working to reduce the stigma associated with menstruation and instead, increase the accessibility of resources available to support women’s health and wellbeing.
With the project being entirely volunteer-led, the grant supported with the successful involvement of 10 young people aged 14-25 volunteering as part of the project, 5 of which were in leadership roles including –
- Leading on communication with Days for Girls UK
- Leading on social media promotion, and letting people know where they can collect free period products,
- Delivering on workshops where 2 members could speak about the kits and how they work
- Welsh language translation
In funding the collaboration, we’re pleased to also hear the opportunities it has brought on for intergenerational working, and working with organisations such as Platfform, Women’s Advocacy Network, Ely Children’s and Families Centre, St David’s Hospital, Cardiff hybs and Cardiff Food Bank to deliver period kits to numerous groups across the city.
Reflecting on volunteering and the project outcomes, Molly said, ‘The volunteer sector is at the heart of our communities. As a young volunteer, who intends on continuing and has benefitted greatly from volunteers, I know the sector doesn’t just continue by itself… This grant lifted the project’s credibility which has now continued into its second year in January 2026’.
Molly’s project is a fantastic example of just how impactful a small passion project can become. To learn more about other Cardiff Youth Led Grants taking place in the city – and the grant itself, please visit the grant page here for more information.
