C3SC was delighted to chair this year’s Minority Ethnic Communities (MEC) Health Fair supported by a dedicated steering group formed by Cardiff and Vale University Health Board, Cardiff Council, CAVAMH, Cardiff and Vale College, C3SC, Cardiff University, Diabetes UK Cymru, Diverse Cymru, EYST Wales, Hayaat Women Trust, Hindu Council Wales, MS Society Cymru, Muslim Doctors Cymru, Oasis, Race Equality First, Sight Cymru, Sub-Sahara Advisory Panel, and The Mentor Ring.
Together, once again, we successfully congregated over 300 people, including 70 stall holders and over 150 members from diverse communities to address the health inequalities and barriers facing our diverse population across the Region. The event offered a safe and inclusive environment for visitors to access a wide range of health and wellbeing information, advice and guidance through information stalls, tester sessions, health checks and screening opportunities, as well as a chance to ask health and wellbeing related matters directly to health professionals at the Q&A session. The Cabinet Secretary for Social Justice, Jane Hutt MS and Cabinet Member for Adult Services and Public Health & Equality Councillor, Julie Sangani addressed the audience highlighting the importance of working together to achieve equity when it comes to building healthy communities. A pull of over 20 volunteers from diverse communities as well as 10 volunteers from Cardiff University School of Medicine helped the event run smoothly providing translation and signposting opportunities as well as invaluable logistic support.
We would like to take the opportunity to thank our sponsors this year: CADR – Centre for Ageing, Cardiff and Vale University Health Board – Public Health Dietitians, Cardiff and Vale University Health Board – Primary Care Clusters, Hayaat Women Trust, Immunisation Team (Cardiff and Vale University Health Board), Leigh Day, Marie Curie, Mental Health Foundation, Public Health Wales Screening services and Health protection Team, Sandy Bear Children’s Bereavement Charity, Tenovus Cancer Care, Wales Cancer Research Centre, Welsh Ambulance and Women Connect First.
