Joint Report: Mental Health Support for Children and Young People in Wales
Healthcare Inspectorate Wales (HIW), Care Inspectorate Wales (CIW), and Estyn have published a comprehensive report on the state of mental health support for children and young people in Wales. The findings highlight both progress and significant challenges that require immediate attention.
Key Findings:
  • Over 50% of children aged 11-16 are unsure where to seek mental health support, and many report difficulties accessing help when needed.
  • Improvements in early intervention through schools and online platforms are noted, but gaps persist in specialist care, particularly for children with complex needs.
  • Disparities in service access and eligibility criteria lead to confusion and frustration among families.
  • Innovations such as Crisis Hubs and Sanctuary Spaces are providing alternatives to emergency care, but demand often exceeds capacity.
  • Greater collaboration between health boards and local authorities is essential to address these challenges effectively.
Recommendations:
The report calls for improved funding, clearer communication between services, and stronger partnerships to ensure timely and equitable mental health support for all children and young people.
