Safeguarding Children and Young People from Sexual Exploitation Conference

15th February 2017

The number of reported child sexual offences in England and Wales is on the increase. In 2014-15 child exploitation offences in England and Wales were at their highest for a decade, with more than 47,000 offences against children recorded. The increases are continuing, and in 2015 police investigated 70,000 reports of child abuse. Gangs and internet related abuse pose huge risks.

The true extent of child sex abuse is not known and it is estimated conservatively that one in ten children will experience sexual abuse.

The government is committed to safeguarding children and young people and preventing sexual exploitation. Most abusers are family members so this is no easy task.

Ofsted have recently published a report on how the police, probation services, youth offending teams, health services and local safeguarding children boards deal with child sexual exploitation has identified certain gaps that need to be closed.

This Department of Events conference will identify the extent of the problem and examine how best to protect children from child sexual exploitation.
