What is ASIST?
- ASIST is a “first aid” course that will equip anyone with the skills to intervene and save a life
- Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training is a 2 day workshop that offers intensive training for front-line workers and community members
- The emphasis is on teaching suicide first-aid, to help a person at risk stay safe and seek further help as needed
- ASIST provides practical training for caregivers seeking to prevent the immediate risk of suicide
- ·It is the most widely used and researched suicide intervention skills training in the world

Aims of the course:
After the training, participants should be able to:
- Recognise that caregivers and persons at risk are affected by personal and societal attitudes about suicide
- Discuss suicide in a direct manner with someone at risk
- Identify risk alerts and develop safe plans
- Demonstrate the skills required to intervene with a person at risk of suicide
- List the types of resources available to a person at risk, including him or herself
- Recognise that suicide prevention is broader that suicide first aid and includes life promotion and self-care for caregivers
