Cardiff and Vale Scouts – Youth Led Grant 2021/22 Case Study

The Cardiff and Vale Scouts applied for Youth Led Grant funding in order to revitalise the Jubilee Campsite. This project was led by their Area Network, a group of young people aged 18-25.

The YLG funding was used to purchase much needed equipment to improve the condition of Jubilee Campsite, to allow it to become usable. Prior to starting the project at Jubilee, the site was overgrown and unsafe. The volunteers attended to the overgrown parts of the site, removed weeds, and generally improved the condition of certain areas to prepare for the planting of new trees.

Project lead Fran Feehan said, ‘Whilst the majority of the trees won’t grow enough for use during our lifetime, it was a rewarding experience knowing future generations of Young People in Scouting will have the opportunity to use the site and hopefully appreciate our efforts.’

Effective use of social media to publicise the progress made at the campsite caught the attention of Lloyds Bank. A group of employees from the organisation then spent two days on Jubilee Campsite assisting in the restoration, proving that this project had a reach beyond its mandate, and was successful in engaging both young people and adults in volunteering.

The Youth Led Grant project, while hugely successful, also offered opportunities for learning. Towards the end of September, many of the Area Network members returned to university. This resulted in a marked loss in engagement from that age group; however, the project was able to share responsibility for much of the remaining work with younger people in the Explorer Section (14-18), allowing even wider engagement from the Scouts.

The Jubilee Campsite project is no short-term venture. There has been a considerable amount of time spent at each stage, planning, and carrying out maintenance. The equipment purchased using Youth Led Grant funding will allow the Cardiff and Vale Scouts to maintain the Campsite’s condition for years to come so the future generations of Young People in Scouting can enjoy all that Jubilee has to offer.
