New study identifies risk factors associated with low birthweights
Researchers at the National Centre for Population Health and Wellbeing Research have carried out a study to understand risk factors for babies with low birthweight, so that resources and preventative measures can be used effectively. The research revealed that mothers with the highest risk of having a baby with low birthweight included those expecting more than one baby. Read more about other risk factors identified in the study.
Professor Kieran Walshe, Director of Health and Care Research Wales, which funded the research, said: “This 20-year study provides valuable insight into the variety of risk factors that can lead to low birth weight… the findings offer tangible recommendations about where to focus efforts to mitigate the incidence of low birth weight in newborns.”
