Research Seminar: Girls and Young Research Seminar: Women’s Participation in Sport and Physical Activity

10th December 2013 @ 9:30 am - 3:30 pm

This research seminar will explore issues and evidence related to girls and young women’s participation in sport and physical activity. Discussions aim to explore the emerging evidence base, generate research ideas and develop collaborations to inform future research around addressing gaps in our knowledge.

Wales has a problem with levels of activity, fitness and obesity particularly among girls and young women. Recent research carried out by Sport Wales has highlighted that 62% of males compared to 51% of females are likely to participate in sport and this follows a similar pattern for teenage girls.

The objectives for the day include:

– To provide an overview of the current data and research available in Wales and the UK
– To learn about the present and evolving evidence related to this topic
– To identify priorities for both future research and future practice
– To promote collaboration between researchers, policy-makers and practitioners
– To inform and encourage potential research grant proposals.

Speakers include:

– ·Prof. Gareth Stratton – Swansea University
– ·Rebecca Mattingley – Sport Wales
– Dr Simon Sebire – University of Bristol

*The seminar is aimed at senior level researchers, statisticians, policy makers (National & Local ‘Creating an Active Wales’ planners), and strategic leads working in Leisure, Sport, Education, Play and Public Health.
The event is free to attend and a buffet lunch will be provided.
