The Welsh Council on Alcohol and Other Drugs ‘Love and Forgiveness’ Retreat
The Welsh Council on Alcohol and Other Drugs is holding their ‘Love and Forgiveness’ retreat over the first weekend of April in association with Living Room Cardiff (The day-care recovery centre for Cardiff and South Wales, http://www.livingroom-cardiff.com)
Many things make up recovery
Think carefully … Is something important to your recovery missing today?
“I found what I was looking for – I had been missing it for a long time, it was peace an fulfillment”
Families affected by addiction CAN and DO recover. Addictions and alcoholism are not just a matter of the addict or the alcoholic recovering, the family also needs to be able to acknowledge their pain, and often guilt and shame. With active addiction the family can become dysfunctional and often falls into chaos and crisis. Not all family members can or will support us in our recovery and can be a destructive force to deal with. It is paramount to gain an understanding of the many complex family dynamics and learn coping strategies to deal with them. Some of the issues addressed will include:
– Identifying the “roles and games people play” – diseased relationships often disintegrate upon close inspection – learn to put an end to harmful behaviours;
– Uncover, discover and discard the often unspoken family “rules and regulations” that keep us trapped in toxic thoughts and behaviours;
– Healing through love from painful memories of the breakdown in the relationships between the child and mum and/or dad.
This is an opportunity to stand back from the hustle and bustle of everyday living and to have some “me” time to reprioritise and place our recoveries at the very top of our agendas – to share experience, strength and hope with like-minded people. It will be centred around the 12-step recovery programme and the key principles of love and forgiveness – a life characterised by these profound ways of living will equip people to live a life of not only being “sober”, “clean” or “abstinent” but developing a way of living that will emotionally equip you to deal with whatever life throws at you.
