What do the Meic helpline advisers do?
We provide a universal low level access advice and advocacy service for children and young people up to the age of 25 pan Wales via managed interactions across a variety of platforms (Instant message, text and telephone). We discuss any issues a young person has. The approach is person centred, rights based via coaching and other skills- based methods. We employ a stop, start, change approach and are issue focused. This differs from Childline, who are a counselling- based service providing emotional support and listening.
The advocacy work we undertake on behalf of children and young people via direct representation is via telephone or email, and we’ll look to put children and young people directly in touch with other face to face services (either assisting them to do this via support from their networks, doing it with them (we have 3- way calling) or representing their views, wishes and feelings directly. A lot of the interactions we have are around self- advocacy and building young people’s resilience with advice and information on self -help around their issues.
