Jien Teh is a volunteer at the Cardiff Volunteer Centre @ C3SC, helping with the translation of informational flyers and pamphlets about C3SC services into Chinese. Shortly, they will be supporting the centre with writing case studies on member activities. Jien is also the newest member of the Cardiff Youth Led Grant Panel.
Being new to Cardiff, they were first introduced to the Volunteer Centre via their university lecturer as a way to meet new people and connect with the city. We asked Jien Teh a few questions about their volunteering experience and here’s what they had to say:
What difference has your volunteering made a) to yourself b) to others ?
a) It was a personal initiative taken to get myself out of my own daily routine. I wanted to have something to do outside of my friends/social circle, university work and lying in my way-too-comfortable bed. So I would say, it got me out of my comfortable routine, and added interesting tasks for me to do that took my mind off stressful university work temporarily. Plus, I don’t see how it’s not rewarding to be able to help those in need!
b) I am still quite new to The Cardiff Volunteer Centre. So far, I have only been engaging in some translation work, but I’m looking forward to providing my support (physically or with my existing skills) to wherever is needed. As of now, I’m happy to be the bridge of communication with my translation work.”
How did the Volunteer Centre help you?
“The Volunteer Centre has great networks. It has widened my connections and has provided opportunities and exposures that cater to my interests. If you don’t have much experiences for your CV, the Volunteer Centre is definitely where you should look into!”
Can you describe volunteering in one sentence?
“The intelligent way to be selfish is to work for the welfare of others.”
