Did you know there is a small community garden at the back of Butetown Community Centre? The Centre is run by Butetown Community Association with the help of residents who regularly use the Centre, and the garden is taken care of with the help of the local community, who were delighted to recently work with Keep Wales Tidy and their Local Places for Nature project on making further renovations to the garden area.
The makeover was a model of partnership working! The garden was cleared by an amazing team of Community Payback project participants. Then the Keep Wales Tidy team, the Centre staff and volunteers spent a couple of days installing flower beds and a greenhouse for the community to use to help make the garden a thriving space. Some of the team @C3SC joined in with building the greenhouse, making shelves for the plants and filling the flower beds with soil. Now the garden is ready for planting, local children from St Mary’s Primary School have been invited to help, and local volunteers have started planting strawberries and other berries. Fruits and vegetables grown in the garden will be used in the kitchen at the Centre for cooking meals for the community, or given with other food items by the Food Pantry which supports people from the Butetown community every Thursday.
Keep Wales Tidy can support groups with their small and big projects, offering free garden packages or provide large-scale makeovers as a part of their Local Places for Nature project. All groups and organisations can apply – priority will be given to projects with strong community involvement, those in towns, cities, deprived areas and spaces with little or no access to nature.
