Youth Mental Health First Aid

Training course delivered by Diverse CymruYMHFA (Wales) is for everybody. It is particularly relevant for those who work with adolescents and may come into contact with young people at risk of experiencing mental distress.Only YMHFA Instructors can deliver this course. They have been specially selected, trained and approved. This ensures YMHFA Instructors have a certain level of knowledge, skills and experience and that there is consistency in delivery across Wales. The course was developed in Australia and has been adapted to better suit the needs of young people in Wales.   YMHFA aims to help participants: 
– Preserve life where a young person may be a danger to themselves or others
– Provide help to prevent mental distress developing into a more serious state
– Promote recovery of good mental health
– Provide comfort to a young person experiencing mental distress

   
YMHFA (Wales) course covers: 
– Mental health first aid
– Common mental health problems
– Depression
– Anxiety disorders
– Psychosis
– Substance use disorders
– Eating disorders
– Non-fatal deliberate self-harming behaviour

   
Participants will learn: 
– The signs and symptoms of these mental health problems
– Where and how to get help
– What sort of help has been shown by research to be effective
