Understanding and Influencing Local Health Boards

5th March 2014 @ 9:30 am - 12:30 pm

Run by the University of South Wales and Welsh Institute of Health and Social Care in conjunction with Deryn, this short seminar is designed for policy specialists and campaigners in Wales who have an understanding of national policy in Wales, and would like to better understand how decisions are made by Local Health Boards.
How do LHBs interpret national guidance? How do they prioritise? How do they introduce change and how do they budget? We will ask you to think about your policy goals and help shape next steps, so that you leave ready to deliver a tangible plan.

LHBs and How They Work
– Performance Management: how are LHBs scrutinised and evaluated and what are the key levers?
– Structure and Membership: how are the different professions represented within decision-making, and how does the organisation operate?

How to Achieve Policy Goals
– Focusing on Change: how do you develop an effective political ask?
– Building Relationships: who do you need to meet and how do you engage with LHBs?
– Sharing your Message: how to meet the LHB agenda and how to be useful and demonstrate added value.

Speakers will include:
– Marcus Longley, Director and Professor of Applied Health Policy, WIHSC
– Mike Ponton, Visiting Professor, WIHSC
– Lisa Turnbull, Senior Fellow, WIHSC
– Nerys Evans, Deryn
