Housing and Immigration

20th October 2015

Only 2% of the UK’s migrants live in Wales, but numbers here have almost doubled and now about 5% of the Welsh population are born outside the UK.

Immigration law is complex, European free movement rules in flux and housing workers face increasing problems in working out eligibility for council waiting lists and homelessness services.  Now the Westminster government wants to roll out a new and controversial proposal to get private landlords to check the immigration status of all new tenants and anyone living with them.

This course will:

  • explain how immigration control works
  • update you on the latest law, caselaw and developments in relation to the housing rights of EU citizens
  • show how these relate to eligibility criteria for council accommodation and homelessness services
  • help you prepare for the “right to rent” laws introduced by the 2014 Immigration Act” and other  ever evolving  Westminster  interventions

Anyone with an interest in and acquaintance with housing would help benefit from this Shelter Cymru one-day course.
