Free Youth in the Media Launch Event
Youth in the Media is a year long research project that has been developed by the Participation Workers’ Network for Wales in Children in Wales, to look at whether children and young people are represented fairly in the media.
The project developed a programme of 4 workshops that has been facilitated in 5 different schools across Wales, looking at young people’s positive and negative perceptions of the media, including:
– Whether children and young people are represented fairly in the media
– How this representation impacts their self-image
– How this representation affects attitudes of others towards children and young people
The project has also included an analysis of articles in local, regional and Wales-wide newspapers over a period of 3 months, mapping out thematic coverage and examples of negative language and tone.
The event will include:
– The launch of a formal report, a young people’s report and materials for use in schools and youth settings
– Presentations by Children in Wales on the Youth in the Media project and recommendations for improving media coverage of children and young people
– Young people from schools talking about the experience of being involved in the project
– A presentation by the See Me | Dyma Fi team in the Children’s Commissioner for Wales on their work in promoting positive attitudes towards children and young people
While of interest to all practitioners who work with children and young people, this work is of particular relevance to policy makers and journalists.
This event is FREE to attend but places are limited. Please register on the Children in Wales website. Lunch will follow the launch at 12.45pm.
