This course will consider the wider impact that mental health has on individuals using substances, whilst giving a deeper understanding around signs and symptoms of mental health problems and the impact substances can have on these.

This course is aimed at people who are working with people who may have, or have been diagnosed with substance misuse and mental health issues.

Learning Outcomes: By the end of the course participants should be able to:
 

– Describe the relationship and interactions between mental health and substance misuse problems
– Explore processes and skills relating to engaging, working with and referring on clients with co-occurring substance misuse and mental health problems
– Apply practice skills relating to brief interventions for those who have mental health problems and misuse substances including alcohol

Trainer: Louise Poley. Louise has worked for substance misuse services within Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan for 22 years. She has fulfilled a number of roles including establishing the substance misuse liaison service that addresses the needs of individuals with drug and alcohol problems in UHW and Llandough hospitals. Louise is currently a Consultant Nurse in substance misuse and honorary lecturer at Cardiff University. She works clinically with clients within the homelessness setting and was awarded RCN Nurse of the Year in Wales 2012 for her project that aims to raise awareness of alcohol related brain injury within this population.
