C3SC recently caught up with Forget-me-not Chorus (FMNC) to learn more about the organisation and their projects after being successfully awarded the Cardiff Shared Prosperity Fund (SPF) Small Grants Scheme 2024-25.
Described as ‘a spa for the soul’, Forget-me-not Chorus (FMNC) uses the power of song to support those living with and alongside dementia. With over thirteen years of experience, FMNC has grown from a single Cardiff-based community choir to a pioneering service reaching people across the UK and beyond. Inclusive singing sessions in communities, care homes, hospitals, and online settings foster connection, reduce isolation and improve the health and well-being of thousands impacted by the condition.
FMNC has worked in social care settings since 2014 and currently offers two care home programmes: Duet and Forte. Both include regular in-person sessions, alongside access to online resources. Sessions create positive shared experiences that bring moments of joy away from the challenges of the everyday caring routine. They provide opportunities for staff and residents to connect meaningfully, helping build community as everyone learns more about each other.
Upon an in-person visit, the charity told us about ‘the Forget-me-not Way’ which is central to its training programme and ensures music leaders have the skills, empathy, and creativity needed to engage participants. Artistic excellence and person-centred delivery are hallmarks of the charity, ensuring that each session is impactful and inclusive. Everyone is seen as a singer first. Labels such as ‘carer’ or ‘person with dementia’ are left behind, and song sheets are avoided to ensure accessibility for all.
Thanks to funding support through the Shared Prosperity Fund, the charity has gone on to successfully deliver its programme in five Cardiff care homes, and told us about the significant impact it is having for their participants:
We are bringing residents, staff, volunteers, and families together for a shared, inclusive, joy-filled experience away from the everyday challenges of the caring routine. The positive impact is clear to see, and we are so grateful for this funding that supports our mission.
Special thanks to Forget-me-not Chorus for sharing with us their journey!
