Volunteer Spotlight: Liam

Originally a Swansea Jack and now an honorary Cardiff resident of nine years, Liam joined Cardiff Third Sector Council (C3SC) in 2024 as a Digital Communications volunteer with the aim of building his confidence, gaining experience and wanting to give something back. Fast forward to today, Liam has become a huge part of our weekly Cardiff Community Radio Show which airs every Monday, exclusively on Radio Cardiff.

Liam initially began his volunteering journey with us by supporting our events such as the Cardiff Volunteer Awards, providing support at the registration desk and welcoming guests. Now, Liam supports with welcoming guests onto our radio show – often times, our very own C3SC members – preparing them before going live on-air! He has also been an asset in providing technical support – managing microphones, and running news and ads. More recently, he’s had a go at speaking on-air ‘despite the butterflies’. Liam has always loved communications and media for the way each brings people together and sparks conversations, so the transition into his current role has felt like a natural fit.

‘Volunteering has pushed me outside of my comfort zone and has been a valuable step back into a work environment‘, he told us.

At the time, the radio show was still fairly new but thanks to Liam’s help, it has built into a rhythm where Liam follows the playlist structure and show plan he had built for the team, carefully planning the music so the show moves between upbeat songs, softer moments, current tracks and older classics without feeling too repetitive. In particular, the show also aims to feature a wide range of artists, including women, Welsh artists, LGBTQ+ musicians and artists of colour. Some of Liam’s personal favourites include Dolly Parton, Fleetwood Mac, Florence and the Machine, and George Ezra.

Outside of volunteering, Liam is a figure skater, horror film fan despite jumping at every scare, tech enthusiast, and passionate about disability awareness and inclusivity.

Liam hopes to continue developing his skills in media and communications with C3SC and is excited to begin contributing to our newsletter and sharing stories that celebrate local communities. Commenting further on his experience, Liam said, ‘I am especially grateful for the support and encouragement of the team, particularly Kailee and Callum.‘

We’d like to thank Liam for being such a vital part of the Digital Communications team, and look forward to the next part of his development. You can catch the Cardiff Community Radio Show on Mondays (except bank holidays) from 11am to 1pm, on Radio Cardiff.
