Whilst the latest census identified 166,000 young carers in the UK, recent research suggests that the number could be much higher – possibly up to 800,000 children in England alone.
Despite young carers citing how rewarding caring is, studies show that it also places a strain on young carers’ education participation and focus. Young carers aged 11-17 are 10 times more likely to be late for school, compared to children of a similar age with no caring responsibilities.
In light of these challenges, this event will provide children and adult support services, local authorities, healthcare professionals, social services, employers, and education professionals with an invaluable opportunity to identify priorities for action to improve young carers’ educational outcomes.
Delegates Will:
- Share best practice in promoting awareness of young carers and the unique struggles they face
- Examine how schools, colleges, universities and employers can provide flexibility and work with young carers’ schedules
- Discuss the mental health impact of being a young carer
- Assess how schools can support carers and ensure that they’re progressing in line with their peers
- Develop a strategy to ensure support exists for young carers after the age of 18
