Introduction to Children’s Rights and Participation

A one-day course facilitated by Children in Wales

This course is designed for practitioners and managers who may be new to social care, health, education and public protection services, or for those who wish to update their knowledge of the ‘Rights’ based agenda – which is constantly evolving and developing through legislation and policy in Wales.

The course will include:

– An overview of the development of children’s rights from a historical perspective to present day
– An understanding of the role of ‘children’s rights’ and how it can be applied and incorporated by professionals in their day-to-day practice
– An exploration of the way in which personal values and attitudes impact on our approach to children’s rights
– A range of participatory techniques which can be adopted in engaging with children and young people
– An understanding of the legislative and policy frameworks, including the Participation Standards which exist in Wales
– An overview of ‘Getting it Right’ – the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) Action Plan for Wales
