This event is part of Refugee Week Wales
This session introduces learners to the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). Many learners are unfamiliar with the IPA and may overlook phonetic transcriptions provided by their dictionaries when they are learning new words. Through the session, learners are confronted with unfamiliar words and asked to attempt to say them accurately. The IPA is introduced and modelled and students begin to relate the phonetic symbols to their sounds. Subsequently, the class are then given the same words that they attempted to pronounce at the start of the session, but are able to say them with near perfect accuracy. The remainder of the lesson is a
consolidation exercise in the format of a competitive game show.
