We would like to highlight Mike Thomas for winning the Volunteer of the Year (25+) Award at the Cardiff Volunteer Awards 2021.
Mike has been an avid volunteer in his local community, read below to learn more about why he won the award:
Mike has volunteered in many community projects in Rumney for the last 25 years. From setting up and coordinating weekly Kidz Klubs and Youth Clubs to establishing Rumney Forum, a local charity. Whilst on furlough during the pandemic he led the establishment of a local food bank, Crossroads, and spent his time helping deliver food and medicines to people who were shielding. He served as chair of the governing body in 2 local schools for 15 years until stepping down from that role at the beginning of the year, although is still on the governing body of both schools.
The whole community benefits from Mike’s volunteering. From children and parents at 2 local primary schools, to literally over 100 children and young people who attend Kidz Klub and RYC each week. The families who have received over 20,000 meals since Crossroads started to the older generation who now have a weekly activity to go along to. There are countless individuals whose lives Mike’s volunteering has impacted over 20+ years. He is kind, caring, compassionate and such an asset to the whole community in East Cardiff.
Thank you so much for all your hard work in supporting your local community.
