Attachment and its Role in Children’s Lives

18th November 2013

A Children in Wales one-day course

This course is aimed at all those interested in the emotional development of babies and children, and particularly those working with, or supporting children and families in stressful circumstances. Attachment disorder has come to be understood as a major contributor to behavioural and emotional problems in children, and in the development of personality disorders in adulthood. Understanding the importance of attachment in early development and how to recognize when family bonds are undermined are critical skills for those working with families. Practitioners also need skills in direct and systemic work to support children with attachment difficulties. This course therefore also describes the interventions that are available if you are working directly with children and their caregivers.

The course will explore:

– Why attachment matters
– How attachment patterns are formed
– What happens when attachment goes wrong
– How observation can help us assess attachment
– What we can do to strengthen and repair attachment relationships within families
