We would like to highlight Clive Brown for winning the Volunteer of the Year Award at the Cardiff Volunteer Awards 2022.
After suffering a subarachnoid haemorrhage in 2014 and being unable to continue his work as a Quality Assurance Officer at Cardiff University, Clive the Headway Cardiff Volunteer Team in 2018, supporting with services for people affected by acquired brain injury. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he helped facilitate weekly zoom activity/social groups and assisted at the Headway Cardiff Walking/Wheeling group at Pedal Power which he continues to do as well as helping at the specialist centre on a weekly basis, and at fundraising events. He is incredibly sensitive to Headway service users’ needs, but is never patronising and does not dumb down his dry and sharp wit. He is as comfortable talking about sports philosophy and takes an interest in, and time to get to know, service user, so engages with them effortlessly. Most of all they know he carers, though there is nothing overly sentimental or gushing about him.
Clive is prepared to challenge Headway if he thinks the risk processes are overly cautious and could hold clients back. His ultimate focus is on clients achieving their potential and the maximum independence possible.Thank you so much for all your hard work in supporting your local community.
