Cultural Awareness in Safeguarding Children

16th March 2017 @ 9:30 am - 4:30 pm

A Children in Wales one-day course

Understanding cultural differences is an important component in effective working with families and children. Practitioners and managers can be reluctant to address child welfare concerns because they fear being accused of racism, intolerance or prejudice. Getting the balance right between cultural sensitivity and making Westernised judgements on child welfare is difficult.

The aim of this course is to raise awareness of cultural, ethnic and religious identities when considering safeguarding issues within asylum seeking, refugee and migrant families. It will increase the understanding of particular safeguarding risks within families and communities and enhance confidence in addressing safeguarding issues with families.

The course is for anyone working with asylum seeking, refugee or other BAME migrant families, in statutory, social care, health or education, community groups and refugee community organisations, including Flying Start, Families First, Communities First, IFST,
