Introducing Governors for Schools Cymru
Who are Governors for Schools?
Governors for Schools is an education charity that finds, places, and supports skilled volunteers as governors on school boards.
For over 20 years the charity has supported schools in England to run effectively by finding high calibre governors to bring their skills and expertise to the table. In November 2020 they launched their service in Wales, and are now supporting education in Wales by connecting volunteers with local schools in need of governors.
The charity is committed to diversity. An important part of the work they do is bringing the opportunity of becoming a school governor to a wider audience. Over the past year, 31 % of applicants identified as BAME, and 65% were under 45 years old.
Their most recent impact report found that 9 out of 10 of their volunteers would recommend the role to a friend, while 86% said that they enjoy or love the role.
How does it work?
Volunteers apply to become a governor by completing the online form. They will then be assigned to their own dedicated partnership manager who will guide them through the placement process. Their bespoke matching service matches volunteers to a school in need by looking at their skillset, location and preferences, so volunteers can be sure they are making a difference.
The charity is also committed to ensuring that governors are well supported in the role, so that they can be as effective as possible. In addition to the mandatory training provided by local authorities, governors placed through the charity also receive access to additional training and resources free of charge, as well as regular webinars on pertinent topics such as wellbeing, safeguarding, remote learning and more.
