SUMMARY:The Welsh Council on Alcohol and Other Drugs 'Love and Forgiveness' Retreat
DESCRIPTION:The Welsh Council on Alcohol and Other Drugs is holding their ‘Love and Forgiveness’ retreat over the first weekend of April in association with Living Room Cardiff (The day-care recovery centre for Cardiff and South Wales\, http://www.livingroom-cardiff.com)Many things make up recoveryThink carefully … Is something important to your recovery missing today?“I found what I was looking for – I had been missing it for a long time\, it was peace an fulfillment”     \nFamilies affected by addiction CAN and DO recover. Addictions and alcoholism are not just a matter of the addict or the alcoholic recovering\, the family also needs to be able to acknowledge their pain\, and often guilt and shame. With active addiction the family can become dysfunctional and often falls into chaos and crisis. Not all family members can or will support us in our recovery and can be a destructive force to deal with. It is paramount to gain an understanding of the many complex family dynamics and learn coping strategies to deal with them. Some of the issues addressed will include: \n – Identifying the “roles and games people play” – diseased relationships often disintegrate upon close inspection – learn to put an end to harmful behaviours; – Uncover\, discover and discard the often unspoken family “rules and regulations” that keep us trapped in toxic thoughts and behaviours; – Healing through love from painful memories of the breakdown in the relationships between the child and mum and/or dad. \n  \nThis is an opportunity to stand back from the hustle and bustle of everyday living and to have some “me” time to reprioritise and place our recoveries at the very top of our agendas – to share experience\, strength and hope with like-minded people. It will be centred around the 12-step recovery programme and the key principles of love and forgiveness – a life characterised by these profound ways of living will equip people to live a life of not only being “sober”\, “clean” or “abstinent” but developing a way of living that will emotionally equip you to deal with whatever life throws at you. \n    \nQuotes from previous retreat guests:“I had felt that I was trapped forever – when the “cage door” was opened I was unsure of how I could survive – this weekend allowed me to step outside the cage and taught me skills to cope with my new found freedom – thank you!”“This weekend helped me to find out what was holding me back – in the safe environment and peaceful surroundings I was inspired and the very core of my soul was touched” \n    \nPrice: £150 – this includes accommodation\, all meals\, tea and coffee throughout the weekend and study resource material.

SUMMARY:3-day Strengthening Families Facilitator Training
DESCRIPTION:FREE 3-day course\, from 9.30am – 4.30pm each day with lunch provided.Partnership \nThe success of the Strengthening Families Programme relies on a well co-ordinated\, multi-agency\, partnership approach. Programme facilitator training is generally available to workers employed in relevant roles within local partner organisations. \n   Aims \nWorkers attending the training must have the support of their organisation and line manager to be involved in the programme. Therefore it is important to consider whether the aims of the Strengthening Families Programme reflect and support the aims of your organisation and whether the programme would potentially assist families you are working with. \n   Teamwork and Values \nEach 7-week programme is facilitated by a small multi-agency team\, therefore it is vital for workers to be committed to working in partnership toward shared goals. It is of equal importance that workers demonstrate a values base which is appropriate to the programme. \nWorkers need to consider if they have an interest in supporting a strengths-based approach to working with families\, and are able to recognise and promote family strengths and resources. Do you have enthusiasm for family skill-building programmes and a strong sense of responsibility for carrying out the programme as designed? \nWhilst the programme is of a highly structured nature it is also important to ensure that workers are able to demonstrate high a degree of flexibility. Can you be flexible with individuals and activities within the confines of a standardised programme? \n   Experience \nWhilst it is not essential\, it is desirable if workers can demonstrate experience in any of the following areas: \n·         Experience\, skills and confidence in working with groups \n·         Presentation & facilitation skills together with good organisational skills. \n·         Experience and skills in family/parenting/youth work \n·         Knowledge of child/youth development in age group 10-14 \n   Availability \nWorkers are asked to facilitate on a minimum of 1 programme per year. Programmes are generally held in the early evening of a weekday\, therefore workers need to consider if they will be able to attend from 4-8pm and also attend a separate 2-hour planning meeting during the day each week. This adds up to a commitment of approximately one day per week for the duration of any seven – week programme. Workers must be supported by their employing agency releasing them during this time. \nWorkers accepted for training are expected to attend an initial information day followed by three consecutive days programme training. \n   CRB checks \nIt is imperative that all programme facilitators have a current enhanced criminal records bureau check within their employing organisation. \n

SUMMARY:The big society in a small country
DESCRIPTION:Cultural historian Peter Stead in conversation with Lord Griffiths of Fforestfach and Dan Boucher. \nThis Institute of Welsh Affairs event is being held to launch Dan Boucher’s new book\, The Big Society in a small country: Wales\, social capital\, mutualism and self-help\, published by the Institute of Welsh Affairs. The book argues that\, far from being an alien\, English import that Wales can well do without\, the big society concept is\, in a real sense\, more Welsh than English. It contends that Wales can certainly add value to the development of big society ideas in practice and at the same time renew its own economic life\, identity and traditions. \nDan Boucher was the Welsh Conservative Assembly Candidate in Swansea East in the 2011 election. Today he works in public affairs at Westminster\, also managing a team covering Stormont\, Holyrood\, Brussels and Strasbourg. Lord Griffiths\, former Head of the Cabinet Office Policy Unit in Downing Street\, has written a Foreword to the book. \nLight refreshments will be served. \nThe event is free but to attend please register your details with the IWA on (029) 2066 0820 or email
