SUMMARY:Food Co-operatives: IWA Coffee Shop Debate
DESCRIPTION:The Institute of Welsh Affairs (IWA) is pleased to invite you to a coffee shop debate. The aim is to engage more people into the IWA by introducing them to events that cover broad subjects that they may not necessarily associate with IWA. This event is FREE to attend but spaces are limited. \nFood Co-operatives with Richard Reast \nRichard Reast is a Food Development Worker with Rural Regeneration Unit. He works with people from all backgrounds to establish their own food co-ops and create a degree of control over food supply. Richard has opened over fifty food co-ops\, in addition he has worked with his local community of Pontypridd to create seasonal events under the banner of “The Little Welsh Nibble” which include an annual sustainable food festival\, planting an apple orchard at a local primary school and running a weekly farmers market. He is an active member of Friends of the Earth\, which informs his work. \n The way we produce\, distribute and consume food has a massive impact on the planet and counts for around 20% of total carbon emissions. We have evolved a food production system\, which is heavily dependent on fossil fuels\, intensive methods\, big business and resultant high levels of waste. There are many communities across Wales with poor access to fresh fruit and vegetables either through proximity or price and there are many smaller scale producers who struggle to find a market for their produce. \n The Community Food Co-operative programme managed by the Rural Regeneration Unit has developed a way of distributing and selling fresh produce which attempts to solve some of these problems and help create a more sustainable food system for the future. Everyone has the right to access affordable healthy food. The system is simple and can be used by virtually any group of people in any community from Primary school to groups of older age or disabled people. There are now over 350 food co-ops all over Wales run on a voluntary not-for-profit basis\, come along to find out more! This will be an engaging and practical session.

SUMMARY:Diverse Cymru: Mental Health First Aid (Wales)
DESCRIPTION:Day 2 of this course is on Monday 10 September. \n   \nWhat is MHFA? \nThis 12-hour MHFA (Wales) course is part of the national training programme for Wales and its partners include the Welsh Government\, Health Challenge Wales and Mind Cymru. Comparisons can be drawn between MHFA and emergency first aid. In both cases\, members of the public can offer immediate aid and support the person to get appropriate help. MHFA improves mental health literacy and helps people to recognise the signs and symptoms of someone with mental health problems; to respond to various mental health crises\, engage with\, support and signpost people to appropriate professional help. \n  \nMHFA aims to: \n – Preserve life where a person may be a danger to themselves or others. – Provide help to prevent a mental health problem developing into a more serious state. – Promote recovery of good mental health. – Provide comfort to a person experiencing mental health distress.  \nWhat others have said: \n“Extremely useful from both a professional and personal perspective – pitched at a level that suits everyone – from those who have little awareness to those who have made a career in mental health issues” – course participant May 2012 \n“Extremely insightful. She is also a ‘Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction’ teacher and runs courses on the Equality Act 2010. She is also an Employment Tribunal Member and an Associate of the Older People’s Commissioner for Wales.  \nBethan was a tutor for Cardiff University on the Employment and Discrimination Law course from 2005-2011. She worked for over 15 years in three statutory equality commissions. One of her roles was managing casework\, dealing with hundreds of cases of discrimination. She has a degree in Economics\, an MSc in Health Economics\, an MA in Women’s Studies and an MSc in Equality and Diversity. \n  \nThe cost is £110 per delegate. DESCRIPTION:The UK government wants to change the way that many people with a learning disability get their benefits. DESCRIPTION:· Are you a community group\, voluntary organisation\, charity or social enterprise working in Cardiff? \n· Do you know what Cardiff Third Sector Council can do for you? \n· Would you like to know more about working more closely with Cardiff Council services in your area?  \n   \nOn 12th September 2012 you can come along to the Third Sector Forum to find out more.  \n   \nThe forum brings third sector groups together and assists with networking and partnership- working within local areas across Cardiff. On the day we will: \n· update you on developments across the city \n· seek your input into how Cardiff Third Sector Council can better support you  \n· discuss issues that could be affecting you (such as funding\, commissioning and governance) \n· give you opportunities to discuss issues affecting specific communities in Cardiff  \n· introduce the Council’s Neighbourhood management areas and the different area teams \n· get your opinions on how the third sector can be involved with Cardiff Council to  better deliver for its citizens

SUMMARY:The meaning of Due Regard  under the Rights of Children and Young Persons (Wales) Measure 2011 training workshop
DESCRIPTION:This ‘Wales Observatory on Human Rights of Children and Young People’ training workshop will consider the meaning of ‘due regard’ and how Welsh Ministers should approach the discharge of their due regard duty under Section 1 of the Rights of Children and Young Persons (Wales) Measure 2011. The workshop will also examine what might be the implications for law and policy making in Wales (including implications for the local government and NGO sectors) . \nThere are a few places left on this course. They will send a booking form on a first come\, first served basis. This is a great opportunity to cycle the 50 miles Taff Trail. You can choose either the fully escorted cycle ride from Brecon to Cardiff\, or join the sponsored ride to Tongwynlais to see Castell Coch (ideal for families)\, or simply join the ride around Bute park. Whichever ride you choose\, be inspired by the Olympics and join in the celebration of tea and cakes at the end. There will be prizes for the person and team who raise the most money. \nYour fundraising will help to support ALL people who want to cycle\, especially those with learning and physical disabilities.

DESCRIPTION:This year’s Memory Walk in aid of the Alzheimer’s Society takes place in Bute Park\, Cardiff on Sunday 16 September (registration at 12 noon; walk begins at 1pm). \nPlease consider supporting this worthwhile cause by taking part in the walk. There’s a choice of two walks: 3.5km and 12k. \nIt will be a fun-filled family day out. There will be entertainment throughout the day including music\, kids’ entertainment and fundraisers. Refreshments will be available after the walk.  \nThe money you raise will help the Alzheimer’s Society to run services in your community.
