SUMMARY:The role of common knowledge in achieving collaboration across practices
DESCRIPTION:Free co-pro seminar with ASCC – Developing Evidence Enriched Practice programme \nThis seminar will outline the practical application of three key processes in effective co-production partnerships with a focus on children’s services.  \nThis seminar will be led by Professor Anne Edwards from Oxford University who has spent many years working with children’s services in England\, regarding inter-professional learning and practice development. Much of this learning will be transferrable to integrated working in adults’ services. Here is a summary of the subject to be discussed which is highly relevant to effective co-production: ‘Working across practice boundaries on complex societal problems is now commonplace. Yet we know relatively little about what enables it to happen successfully. One analytic challenge for studies of inter-professional work is to understand what mediates collaboration across the boundaries of practices so that what matters for each practice is still in play in the judgements that are made. The argument in this seminar is that attention should be paid to how what matters for each potentially collaborating practitioner is brought to bear on both interpreting and responding to work problems. Using the analytic resources of cultural–historical theory\, three conceptual tools are presented. These tools\, relational expertise\, relational agency and common knowledge\, are the outcome of analyses of inter- professional work in studies in England over the last ten years. They are offered as resources for both the analysis and development of cross-practice collaborations. The seminar will present evidence from three recent studies of creating the conditions for inter-professional collaborations in children’s services to examine the construction and use of common knowledge as a resource for those tasked with service integration. Common knowledge is seen as comprising the motives that take forward each contributing practice. It is woven into continuously contestable organisational narratives. These mediate interactions across practice boundaries and give strategic direction to activities in and across services which are in the process of integration.’ If you would like to know more about this event or book a place\, please contact Isobel Birden at

SUMMARY:Why do pictures matter?
DESCRIPTION:IWA Coffee Shop Debate @ Chapter \nFor two hundred years it was a received wisdom\, handed down by highest authorities\, that Wales was devoid of a visual culture. Welsh people were\, for some unspecified reason\, congenitally unvisual. Beginning in the 1980s\, Peter Lord sought to demonstrate how this notion could be understood as an aspect of a broader cultural imperialism. It didn’t make him popular with the establishment. When a debate was organised at Chapter in 1992 to discuss the policies of the Art Department of the National Museum\, the Director contacted the police and the Crown Prosecution Service in an attempt to stop the event. A cartoon appeared in the Bulletin of the Welsh Academy\, showing a gibbet erected at the front of the Museum: ‘I’ve heard there’s going to be a hanging …’ Twenty one years later\, Peter Lord returns to Chapter to continue the broader debate. In his new book\, Relationships with Pictures: An Oblique Autobiography\, he discusses why pictures matter\, in terms of the networks of human relationships within which they are made\, and through which they affect our lives. This event is free to attend. To confirm your place please email events@iwa.org.uk  or call 029 2066 0820.

SUMMARY:Building our own Elder Care Services in Wales
DESCRIPTION:Co-operative Social Care Workshop \nAn ageing population and a squeeze on Local Authority budgets challenge us all to find new ways to provide care and support for older people.Private commercial provision is not the only alternative. Co-operatives have a long tradition in Wales and we can now develop a co-operative model for social care. Service users\, service providers and local community stakeholders could all be members in a Social Co-operative. This is a model for the provision of social services which is well established in other parts of the world including Quebec and Italy. It provides the affordable quality services people need whilst also protecting workers and community interests.International expert John Restakis (past Executive Director\, British Columbia Co-operative Association) will be discussing the National Co-op Elder Care Project being developed with support from the Canadian Federal Government and using a social franchising model. Also\, come to learn about work being undertaken in Newport to establish the first UK social care co-operative.It may help participants to better understand this model of enterprise if they check out the member-controlled Enterprise website at: http://s.coop/1bcyi \nNumbers are limited and attendance will be confirmed before 25 June to help secure a balanced audience. Please register your interest at http://progressive-cooperators.org.uk/event-reservationParticipants are strongly recommended to read evidence presented to the Welsh Co-operative and Mutuals Commission. You can read this and other documents on the website\, and comment on them there. The comments or questions thereby made can be made known in advance to the organisers.http://progressive-cooperators.org.uk/event-reservation/papers-for-1st-julyA workshop report can be made available for £15.For further information email: David_smith45@tiscali.co.uk or telephone (01633) 266781.

SUMMARY:Co-operative Education in Wales conference
DESCRIPTION:This year’s annual Co-operative Cymru/Wales Conference – in association with the Institute of Welsh Affairs – will explore the benefits that co-operative principles and practice can bring to the Welsh education system. Co-operative learning is a distinctive teaching strategy that is increasingly used in schools and colleges around the world. It is based on the principle that learning is often most effective when learners can think and talk together\, share ideas\, and question\, analyse and solve problems together. It is also reflected in the way education institutions are managed and influences their relationship with parents and the wider community. \nThe conference will provide an opportunity for educationalists and the co-operative movement to share and discuss how co-operative education is being interpreted and developed across the UK. \nThe conference will feature speakers and practical sessions from educationalists in Scotland\, England\, Northern Ireland as well as from Wales. It will also enable a discussion as to which aspects\, across the broad spectrum of what is termed co-operative education\, may be appropriate to Wales and can begin to identify a Welsh way of embracing the most appropriate aspects of co-operative education. \n    \nConference and booking details \n – The conference is free and a buffet lunch will be provided. – There are a limited number of tickets available so please book early to avoid disappointment. – You can download more information here. \nThis event is free to attend\, please call to register your place on 029 2066 0820 or email emmabrennan@iwa.org.uk

It includes cross-sector comment on how the new landscape impacts on commissioners\, providers\, offenders (including young offenders transitioning to adult services) and their families\, victims and the wider community. Providers\, commissioners\, strategic leads and academics are invited to hear the opportunities this new landscape brings and explore solutions to future challenges. \n  \nYou can read the full programme here and book your place here.
