The delegates have been raving over it” – Ceri Harris\, Diversity and Equality Manager\, Velindre NHS Trust\, October 2011 \n“Just to let you know we had an excellent couple of days last week. Very many thanks to Bethan – a fantastic trainer” – Dr Dolores Davey\, MA Social Work Programme Director\, School of Social Sciences\, Cardiff University\, 7th July 2011 \nThe course tutor – Bethan Roberts \nBethan is a Wales Government Approved Mental Health First Aid Instructor and regularly delivers adult Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) courses and Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) courses. SUMMARY:Food Co-operatives: IWA Coffee Shop Debate
DESCRIPTION:The Institute of Welsh Affairs (IWA) is pleased to invite you to a coffee shop debate. The aim is to engage more people into the IWA by introducing them to events that cover broad subjects that they may not necessarily associate with IWA. This event is FREE to attend but spaces are limited. \nFood Co-operatives with Richard Reast \nRichard Reast is a Food Development Worker with Rural Regeneration Unit. He works with people from all backgrounds to establish their own food co-ops and create a degree of control over food supply. Richard has opened over fifty food co-ops\, in addition he has worked with his local community of Pontypridd to create seasonal events under the banner of “The Little Welsh Nibble” which include an annual sustainable food festival\, planting an apple orchard at a local primary school and running a weekly farmers market. He is an active member of Friends of the Earth\, which informs his work. \n The way we produce\, distribute and consume food has a massive impact on the planet and counts for around 20% of total carbon emissions. We have evolved a food production system\, which is heavily dependent on fossil fuels\, intensive methods\, big business and resultant high levels of waste. There are many communities across Wales with poor access to fresh fruit and vegetables either through proximity or price and there are many smaller scale producers who struggle to find a market for their produce. \n The Community Food Co-operative programme managed by the Rural Regeneration Unit has developed a way of distributing and selling fresh produce which attempts to solve some of these problems and help create a more sustainable food system for the future. Everyone has the right to access affordable healthy food. The system is simple and can be used by virtually any group of people in any community from Primary school to groups of older age or disabled people. There are now over 350 food co-ops all over Wales run on a voluntary not-for-profit basis\, come along to find out more! This will be an engaging and practical session.

DESCRIPTION:This retreat has been organised by the Welsh Council on Alcohol and Other Drugs and Living Room Cardiff. \nHas your life been directly or indirectly affected by addiction? Addiction robs us of our identity and the sense of “belonging” – within our family\, community\, relationships etc. The retreat is centred around recovery principles. The organisers believe that a life characterised by love and forgiveness will equip you to live a life of not only being “sober”\, “clean” or “abstinent” but developing a way of living that will emotionally equip you to deal with whatever life throws at you. You are entitled to live an abundant life which is not scripted by your family\, friends\, peer group or anyone else who negatively controls you. \nAt this retreat you will: \n – Learn about the 12-step program of recovery; – Break through the fears that hold you back (including unconscious fears); – Reflect on spiritual resources; – Boost your self-esteem; – Learn how to forgive and heal the wounds of the past; – Improve your communication and life skills. \nThe retreat involves large group meetings\, small sharing meetings and one-to-one sharing – practical workshops and relaxation times. \nHear from others: – “This retreat gave me hope and courage to face myself – in getting away from the busy life I lead\, to deal with the truth of my past\, being in a safe place with like minded people has set me free from the confusion and helped me to forgive” – “My world is not such a dark place as I know I am no longer alone – I now understand the recovery program for myself and am able to experience the freedom it promises” \nPrice for the weekend: £225 – This includes accommodation\, all meals\, tea and coffee throughout the week and study resource \nmaterial. \nTo find out more and book your place: \nContact Sharon at The Welsh Council on Alcohol and Other Drugs\, 58 Richmond Road\, Cardiff CF24 3AT \nTel. SUMMARY:Global Grangetown hosts holiday weekend event – Music On The Marl
DESCRIPTION:Young musicians and DJs will be showcasing their talents in a Global Grangetown afternoon at The Marl to kick off Bank Holiday weekend. \nTogether with lead partners Sound Progression and the Somali Integration Society\, Cardiff Third Sector Council (C3SC) is staging the event on Friday 24th August (12 noon – 6pm). \nBut the programme will be entirely run by young people from the area. \nThe day’s entertainment will be hosted by members of REMIX – the South Cardiff Youth Forum – with musical performances from the V-Pod Mobile Music Stage. SUMMARY:Protecting your charity from risk and fraud
DESCRIPTION:The vast majority of people working in the voluntary sector are honest and committed. However\, charities are not exempt from fraudulent activity – as is evident from recent press reports. It is therefore vital that organisations know what the dangers are and put in place sensible measures to prevent or detect fraud. \nThis WCVA seminar will help make you aware of the ‘danger signs’ and of the sort of controls needed to minimise risks. It will also provide a refresher on good general and financial risk management. \nThis seminar is hosted by Watts Gregory\, chartered accountants and business advisors. \nLunch will be provided before the seminar.
