SUMMARY:Building our own Elder Care Services in Wales
DESCRIPTION:Co-operative Social Care Workshop \nAn ageing population and a squeeze on Local Authority budgets challenge us all to find new ways to provide care and support for older people.Private commercial provision is not the only alternative. Co-operatives have a long tradition in Wales and we can now develop a co-operative model for social care. Service users\, service providers and local community stakeholders could all be members in a Social Co-operative. This is a model for the provision of social services which is well established in other parts of the world including Quebec and Italy. It provides the affordable quality services people need whilst also protecting workers and community interests.International expert John Restakis (past Executive Director\, British Columbia Co-operative Association) will be discussing the National Co-op Elder Care Project being developed with support from the Canadian Federal Government and using a social franchising model. Also\, come to learn about work being undertaken in Newport to establish the first UK social care co-operative.It may help participants to better understand this model of enterprise if they check out the member-controlled Enterprise website at: http://s.coop/1bcyi \nNumbers are limited and attendance will be confirmed before 25 June to help secure a balanced audience. Please register your interest at http://progressive-cooperators.org.uk/event-reservationParticipants are strongly recommended to read evidence presented to the Welsh Co-operative and Mutuals Commission. You can read this and other documents on the website\, and comment on them there. The comments or questions thereby made can be made known in advance to the organisers.http://progressive-cooperators.org.uk/event-reservation/papers-for-1st-julyA workshop report can be made available for £15.For further information email: David_smith45@tiscali.co.uk or telephone (01633) 266781.

SUMMARY:Co-operative Education in Wales conference
DESCRIPTION:This year’s annual Co-operative Cymru/Wales Conference – in association with the Institute of Welsh Affairs – will explore the benefits that co-operative principles and practice can bring to the Welsh education system. Co-operative learning is a distinctive teaching strategy that is increasingly used in schools and colleges around the world. It is based on the principle that learning is often most effective when learners can think and talk together\, share ideas\, and question\, analyse and solve problems together. It is also reflected in the way education institutions are managed and influences their relationship with parents and the wider community. \nThe conference will provide an opportunity for educationalists and the co-operative movement to share and discuss how co-operative education is being interpreted and developed across the UK. \nThe conference will feature speakers and practical sessions from educationalists in Scotland\, England\, Northern Ireland as well as from Wales. It will also enable a discussion as to which aspects\, across the broad spectrum of what is termed co-operative education\, may be appropriate to Wales and can begin to identify a Welsh way of embracing the most appropriate aspects of co-operative education. \n    \nConference and booking details \n – The conference is free and a buffet lunch will be provided. – There are a limited number of tickets available so please book early to avoid disappointment. – You can download more information here. \nThis event is free to attend\, please call to register your place on 029 2066 0820 or email emmabrennan@iwa.org.uk

It includes cross-sector comment on how the new landscape impacts on commissioners\, providers\, offenders (including young offenders transitioning to adult services) and their families\, victims and the wider community. Providers\, commissioners\, strategic leads and academics are invited to hear the opportunities this new landscape brings and explore solutions to future challenges. \n  \nYou can read the full programme here and book your place here. SUMMARY:The Romani Cultural and Arts Company is pleased to invite you to the National Symposium
DESCRIPTION:The event is organised by the RCAC\, with the support of the Open Society Institute’s Early Childhood Programme\, Roma ‘Kopaçi’ projects. \nThe National Symposium is a development of the annual Gypsy\, Roma & Traveller History Month Workshop\, inaugurated by Dr Adrian Marsh in 2010\, that encourages members from Local Authority\, Central Government and GRT communities to discuss openly the challenges experienced in accessing services and provision. The previous annual workshops\, held in Newport\, have been aimed at promoting a better understanding and appreciation of the developments needed to establish improved social cohesion and integrate GRT communities for the greater good and have been led by Dr Marsh and Professor Thomas Acton in 2011 and then by the Romani Cultural & Arts Company since 2012. \nIn 2013\, the message has been extended to include the concerns regarding wider Romani communities across Europe and beyond. The situation in many countries in the European Union is a cause for profound concern\, as the recent report from the former Council of Europe’s Commissioner for Human Rights\, Thomas Hammerberg has noted. Beyond the borders of the EU\, the economic and social conditions for Roma and other Gypsy groups grow more grave day by day. Many of these communities are now present in the UK and Wales in particular and they seek better opportunities for improved quality of life and access to services. \nIn particular\, concerns to improve access to quality\, early childhood education and care services\, seen as the key mechanism to achieving long-term change for Romani peoples\, are at the heart of this year’s symposium. The main focus for this year is accommodation and the home and the associated issues relating to access to high quality support and services. There will be a number of important speakers coming from a wide range of organisations that promote and support Romani rights\, in addition to well-known academic experts in the field of Romani Studies\, policy and development.  \nSpeakers and workshop leaders will include a judge with experience of dealing with the GRT community\, Dr Margaret Greenfields\, a Slovakian early childhood expert and experienced representatives from the fields of policing and social work. All of these will bring a fresh look at the issues and support delegates in exploring potential solutions.Delegate numbers are limited so please book as soon as possible.

SUMMARY:Join in the Everyone’s Future celebration
DESCRIPTION:Everyone’s Future will celebrating the first year of its Big Lottery Funding at the Wales Millennium Centre on 23rd June 2013. \nEveryone’s Future is a partnership project between Age Concern Cardiff and The Vale of Glamorgan and Vibe Experience\, which aims to raise awareness of Age Discrimination and challenge negative stereotypes of older and younger people. Most people do.And it’s not surprising when they happen so often – around a third of over-65s and half of those over 80 will fall every year. But there are many simple things that older people can do to prevent falls\, and their potentially devastating consequences\, if only we can get the message across.” (Age UK website www.ageuk.org.uk ) \n
