SUMMARY:The Mountaintop at The Riverfront
DESCRIPTION:The Mountaintop to tour Wales \nFio are pleased to announce that The Mountaintop will be touring Wales in October 2017\, following rave reviews of the production when it was presented at The Other Room in Cardiff in October 2016. The company will be launching the tour at the Welsh Assembly Senedd in Cardiff on the 2nd of October\, in an event which will also celebrate the beginning of Black History Month. \nThe Mountaintop is the fictional depiction of Martin Luther King’s last night on Earth. In his motel room in Memphis\, King is visited by Camae\, a maid on a much greater mission than delivering his coffee. Gripping\, relevant and often humorous\, Katori Hall’s The Mountaintop won an Olivier Award for Best New Drama. \nMensah Bediako will re-join the company to play the part of Martin Luther King\, while Rebecca Carrie joins the company as Camae\, the maid. The show is directed by Fio Artistic Director\, Abdul Shayek\, with Design by Stacey-Jo Atkinson\, Sound Design by Dan Lawrence\, Lighting Design by Ciarán Cunningham and Video Design by Joe Fletcher. \nDuring the event at the Senedd on the 2nd of October\, Fio will be launching The Mountaintop Wales tour with performances\, speeches and discussions. Fio will be bringing businesses\, organisations and schools together to discuss issues about race in Wales\, as well as offering an opportunity for students from associated schools to perform. \nThe Mountaintop Director\, Abdul Shayek said; “The Mountaintop spoke to me in way no other play had for some time now. It provoked a number of emotions within me\, from amusement to anger and frustration. I’d like to achieve that with our audiences and start a wider conversation around race\, prejudice and importantly the need for us to embrace each other’s differences. This will also be one of the very few times when we have an all black cast on a stage in Wales\, something which is absolutely mind boggling\, not because it is being done now\, but because it is 2017 and the fact that this hasn’t happened more often makes me frustrated and sad. To tour this production during Black History Month across Wales makes me very proud of the company and hope that audiences across Wales are ready to be a part of the conversation.” \nFio is a Cardiff based theatre company working across the UK and internationally\, bringing world class socio-political stories to local audiences. Everyone has a story to tell\, and each individual is as important as the next. Together\, Fio makes theatre that celebrates individuality\, tearing down stereotypes and offering everybody a chance to make their mark in the world. \nTheatre Fio will be at The Riverfront on 18 & 19 October – you can buy tickets online or call 01633 656757

SUMMARY:Spirit 2017 - A Healthy Childhood
DESCRIPTION:Spirit is a conference filled with inspiring keynote speeches\, lively discussions and practical workshops about children’s play. \nSpotlight on Dr Mariana Brussoni – keynote speaker \nPopping the bubble wrap for children’s health. Most of us have childhood memories of long hours spent outdoors and away from watchful eyes of adults. The childhood of today looks very different\, with more time spent indoors\, supervised\, in structured activities\, and in front of screens. \n This interactive presentation will explore the effects of changing childhoods and limited outdoor time for taking risks as part of their play on children’s health and development. \n Participants will consider what can be done to restore balance and tools for talking to parents\, educators and others about the importance of risk taking in play. \nMariana is an Associate Professor in the Department of Paediatrics and the School of Population and Public Health at the University of British Columbia\, Canada. She is an investigator with the British Columbia Children’s Hospital Research Institute and Academic Scientist with the British Columbia Injury Research & Prevention Unit. \n Mariana is also a board member of the Child & Nature Alliance of Canada. Trained as a developmental psychologist\, Mariana investigates child injury prevention\, including developmental importance of children’s risky play. She currently leads research to develop an index of the playability of the built environment; and to develop and evaluate an online tool to reframe parents’ risk perceptions with the goal of facilitating children’s access to nature-based risky play. \nWho should attend? Playworkers and play professionals\, people working in communities\, youth and community workers\, town and community councils\, housing associations\, community regeneration officers\, and anyone with an interest in or responsibility for children’s play. \nEarly Bird closes 15th July – Book Now.
