SUMMARY:Mental Health First Aid (two day course)
DESCRIPTION:This two-day course is for formal and informal carers working in mental health care and support. The course is applicable to community\, day and residential carers. QCF assessors / tutors in Health and Social Care can use the course as CPD. \nThe second day of this course is Thursday 12 November. \nThis is a two-day introduction to Mental Health First Aid will cover the following modules: \n– Covering the impact of mental health in Wales via an overview of recent legislation\, such as Together for Mental Health (2012)\, Mental Health (Wales) Measure 2010\, Talk to me 2 (the national action plan to reduce suicide and self-harm in Wales) and the impact of the Social Services and Well-Being Act 2014. Drawing on the principles behind this legislation the module will examine the values and attitudes around mental health treatment and recovery as well as the safeguarding expectations for citizens in Wales. \n– Build an understanding of the classification of psychiatric conditions\, drawing from the established Diagnostic Statistical Manual IV and the WHO International Classification of Disease Volume 9. This module will highlight the relationship between the most common types of psychiatric disorder and identify the key symptoms within each category. \n– Develop intervention skills in mental health first aid – this module will instil practical skills in initial engagement\, active listening and effective responding. Risk-assessment and the balance between directive and non-directive intervention are also covered\, as are referral methods and resources. \n– Working with psychiatric conditions – the module will look in detail at the presentation and recognition of anxiety and depression\, in addition to first aid responses to panic attacks and expressions of suicidal thoughts or behaviours. \n– Working with Substance Misuse – the module will look in detail at the presentation and recognition of psychosis and substance misuse. Participants will consider causation and prognosis while reviewing the impact of treatment programmes. \nLearning outcomes are mapped to the knowledge components of the Mental Health Units 618 / 619 in the QCF Diploma in Health and Social Care. \nParticipants will gain an attendance certificate mapped to the relevant QCF units and learning outcomes. \nTime each day: 9.30am to 4.30pm. DESCRIPTION:WCVA seminar \nDelivered by Liz Maher\, Director of Centurion VAT Specialists Ltd \nYou may have some understanding of the rules and regulations relating to VAT – and how they apply to your organisation – but your VAT considerations could be rather more complex if you are embarking on projects involving elements such as construction\, collaboration or the transfer of services. \nThis interactive seminar will: \n• provide you with a more strategic understanding of the VAT issues your charity faces\, specifically in relation to     o property development projects     o collaborations with third parties\, and     o the transfer of leisure and cultural services activities from a local authority to a newly formed charitable body \n• give an insight into the VAT aspects you need to understand as you explore fundraising options\, covering topical issues such as     o direct mailings\,     o the Cost Sharing Exemption and     o the interaction of Gift Aid with VAT. \nThe seminar is for designed to assist those whose roles require an awareness of VAT. SUMMARY:Prenatal Alcohol Exposure and its Lifelong Effects
DESCRIPTION:This 1-day Children in Wales course is aimed at people who are working with children or young adults with mental health problems/ disabilities within any setting. \n Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is the leading\, known\, preventable intellectual disability and is only caused by prenatal alcohol exposure. International studies have suggested that 1 in 100 people may have FASD; other studies have suggested that 5 in 100 people have this condition\, meaning that there could statistically be between 8000 and 40\,000 babies born a year with this condition in the UK\, though it is unlikely that many would be diagnosed. Naturally these babies grow up and will require support throughout their lives. \n Learning Outcomes: By the end of the course participants will be able to:   \n\nIdentify the causes of FASD\nExplore the long term effects of FASD on young people and adults\nExplain the difference between FAS (Foetal Alcohol Syndrome) and FASD\nDiscuss the behaviours and needs of someone with FASD throughout their different life stages\nRelate FASD development to the style of support  and type of work being delivered\n\n Trainer: NewLink Wales are offering this training in partnership with Red Balloon Training. Joanna has studied and worked in social care for 18 years and has spoken at various conferences throughout the UK\, taken part in and consulted on an FASD film\, co-written an FASD booklet and presented an academic poster at an international FASD conference. Joanna is a qualified tutor and is extremely passionate about FASD education\, to equip those living or working with people with FASD to have the knowledge\, confidence and skills to improve support and service provision for individual’s affected by FASD.

SUMMARY:Mental Health First Aid (two day course)
DESCRIPTION:This two-day course is for formal and informal carers working in mental health care and support. The course is applicable to community\, day and residential carers. QCF assessors / tutors in Health and Social Care can use the course as CPD. \nThe second day of this course is Tuesday 10 November. \nThis is a two-day introduction to Mental Health First Aid will cover the following modules: \n– Covering the impact of mental health in Wales via an overview of recent legislation\, such as Together for Mental Health (2012)\, Mental Health (Wales) Measure 2010\, Talk to me 2 (the national action plan to reduce suicide and self-harm in Wales) and the impact of the Social Services and Well-Being Act 2014. Drawing on the principles behind this legislation the module will examine the values and attitudes around mental health treatment and recovery as well as the safeguarding expectations for citizens in Wales. \n– Build an understanding of the classification of psychiatric conditions\, drawing from the established Diagnostic Statistical Manual IV and the WHO International Classification of Disease Volume 9. This module will highlight the relationship between the most common types of psychiatric disorder and identify the key symptoms within each category. \n– Develop intervention skills in mental health first aid – this module will instil practical skills in initial engagement\, active listening and effective responding. Risk-assessment and the balance between directive and non-directive intervention are also covered\, as are referral methods and resources. \n– Working with psychiatric conditions – the module will look in detail at the presentation and recognition of anxiety and depression\, in addition to first aid responses to panic attacks and expressions of suicidal thoughts or behaviours. \n– Working with Substance Misuse – the module will look in detail at the presentation and recognition of psychosis and substance misuse. Participants will consider causation and prognosis while reviewing the impact of treatment programmes. \nLearning outcomes are mapped to the knowledge components of the Mental Health Units 618 / 619 in the QCF Diploma in Health and Social Care. \nParticipants will gain an attendance certificate mapped to the relevant QCF units and learning outcomes. \nTime each day: 9.30am to 4.30pm.
