SUMMARY:Getting it right: a better private rented sector for everyone
DESCRIPTION:Private renters have nowhere near the same access to support as social tenants. With more and more people looking to the PRS for long-term housing\, action must be taken to ensure that vulnerable private tenants don’t suffer alone and that landlords are supported to increase their understanding of the different needs of vulnerable tenants.   This seminar includes the best examples of innovative working from within Wales and beyond to assist younger and older people\, homeless applicants\, prison leavers\, disabled people and others to live a quality life in private rented housing. The new Housing (Wales) Act includes new powers for local authorities to house homeless households in the PRS – we will be looking at how local authorities are gearing up for the change.  The seminar will also look at the implications of the Renting Homes Bill for tenants and landlords\, and the Welsh Government’s model contract to ask how well it meets the needs of people with different communication needs. To book a place or if you would like more information\, please contact Mel Evans at mele@sheltercymru.org.uk or 01792 483072 Supported by British Gas \nCost: £75

SUMMARY:Human Rights Tour 2014
DESCRIPTION:  \nWhat is the Human Rights Tour? \n2014 marks the fourth year of the British Institute of Human Rights’s Human Rights Tour. The idea is a simple one – go across the UK holding free to attend pop-up events in local communities\, raising awareness about human rights\, how they are relevant in everyday life\, and having a space for debate and discussion. \n  \nWho is the Human Rights Tour for? \nIt’s for you! Whether you are an individual\, a voluntary sector worker or a public servant come along and join the conversation. \n  \nWhat happens at the events? \nThe model for each pop-up uses a mix of presentations\, discussions and interactive sessions\, with some creative elements too! We will be taking this Tour all around the UK\, but BIHR makes sure that every event is rooted in your local concerns. \n  \nHow much does it cost? \nThe Tour events are free to attend. As the events are so popular (and we often have waiting lists)\, we will charge you a £30 no-show fee if you sign up and don’t attend\, without cancelling your place at least 7 days before. We hope you appreciate that this is so that we can accomodate as many people as possible\, and avoid no-shows. \n  \nRegister online here. \n

SUMMARY:Wales Third Sector Funding Conference 2014
DESCRIPTION:Each year at the Funding Conference delegates from across Wales gather to examine the myriad of funding strategies available to the sector\, from grants and trusts to online trading and community fundraising. \n  \nThe third sector is continually asked to do more and more\, but we’re asked to do this with less and less funding – and there’s a lot of competition for the money that is available. That’s where the Wales third sector funding conference comes in. We’ll be looking at how we can help your group make a better ask for funding\, whether you’re raising funds from trusts\, businesses\, Big Lottery Fund\, Europe or are simply trying to find a way to increase donations from your supporters. We’ll be hearing from Michael Norton OBE\, a ‘serial social entrepreneur’ on innovations in fundraising\, Paul Streets of the Lloyds Bank Foundation will examine the challenges faced by the groups they fund and Simi Epstein of Hope House Children’s Hospice will show how they refocused their fundraising efforts to ‘make a better’ ask. And there’s a selection of 22 workshops covering: \n – Digital fundraising – Making a better ask to Big Lottery Fund – Crowdfunding – Asking businesses for support – Joint working – Measuring and communicating impact \nAnd much more besides.   If you’re not confident when approaching potential funders\, this is where you can learn to make your ask stand out. SUMMARY:E-Safety With the Under 8s
DESCRIPTION:A half-day Children in Wales course \nChildren are increasingly becoming regular users of internet connected devices from a very young age.  A study ‘Children and parents: Media use and attitudes in the nations’\, published by Ofcom in 2012 reported that in each of the four nations over 80% of children aged 5-15 use the internet at home. Parents of children aged 5 -15 in Wales are more likely than the UK average to have concerns about content on the internet (25% vs. 17%) and smartphone ownership among 5 -15s has increased in all four nations since 2011.  Adults who care for and support young children\, and their parents often express a lack of confidence in using and managing access to the technology that the children take for granted. \nThis course is aimed at anyone working with children under 8 years old and who wants to ensure that any access to new technology (computers\, tablets\, games consoles\, smart phones etc) is both safe and appropriate. It is particularly suitable for adults who are not IT specialists. \n  \nAims \nFor adults who work directly with younger children or with their parents to better understand the implications of internet use in this age group.  To explore concerns\, and to develop some practical methods to support safe use of a range of devises that are increasing becoming an integral part of the daily lives of young children. \n  \nLearning outcomes \nParticipants will: \n – Understand the ways in which children are able to access the internet – Consider both the risks and benefits of younger children using internet connected devices – Understand the benefits and shortcomings of using parental controls on a variety of devices – Devised a set of ground rules for safe use of the internet and computers – Be able to support children to better protect themselves online – Identify warning signs to be aware of and how to report concerns  \n  \nCosts: Members £60   Non Members £80 \nFind out more and book via the Children in Wales website. \n  \n  \n
