SUMMARY:Cardiff and Vale University Health Board engagement sessions
DESCRIPTION:Recently\, the health board has been looking at its services for older people\, as part of its longer term plans to make sure that more of the care people receive is based as close to home as possible where appropriate\, rather than in hospitals. This is all part of the health board’s ambition\, along with Cardiff Council and the Vale of Glamorgan Council\, to provide services for older people that are more integrated\, less disjointed\, more convenient and\, ultimately\, better for older people. We are currently discussing our ideas to improve some hospital services with patients\, their carers and families\, stakeholders and the public more generally\, and asking for feedback. The themes under discussion relate specifically to services currently provided at West Wing in Cardiff city centre\, as well as some services at St David’s Hospital\, Barry Hospital and Rookwood Hospital. Our ideas have been developed by specialist elderly care clinicians from our Clinical Gerontology Directorate and we believe these ideas will help improve services for older people in Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan. \nThursday\, 22nd May 2014 at 9.30am OR 11am

SUMMARY:'Tiger Brides' documentary screening
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to a ground-breaking documentary called Tiger Brides. Between 1942 and 1952 about one million War Brides emigrated from 50 different countries to the United States “for the love of an American soldier’”. While the marriages between White GIs and foreign women are richly documented\, few know about the wives of Black GIs. These homesick Black servicemen would seek the attention of British women for companionship and marriage. Of the one million War Brides that came to the U.S.: 300-400\,000 were European; 40-70\,000 were British; and an estimated 75-100 were multi-ethnic Welsh War Brides from Cardiff\, Wales. “Tiger Brides” documents the voices of six (6) multi-ethnic British GI Brides from Tiger Bay (a multicultural community in Cardiff). To omit the vivid stories of these women would deny legitimate perspective from these eye-witnesses to World War II and the GI Bride experience.

SUMMARY:Attachment and its Role in Children's Lives
DESCRIPTION:A one-day Children in Wales course   \nThis course is aimed at all those interested in the emotional development of babies and children\, and particularly those working with\, or supporting children and families in stressful circumstances. Attachment disorder has come to be understood as a major contributor to behavioural and emotional problems in children\, and in the development of personality disorders in adulthood. Understanding the importance of attachment in early development and how to recognize when family bonds are undermined are critical skills for those working with families. Practitioners also need skills in direct and systemic work to support children with attachment difficulties. This course therefore also describes the interventions that are available if you are working directly with children and their caregivers.  \n  \nThe course will explore:  \n – Why attachment matters – How attachment patterns are formed – What happens when attachment goes wrong – How observation can help us assess attachment – What we can do to strengthen and repair attachment relationships within families \nPrice:  Members £115  Non-members £135  \nFind out more and book your place via the Children in Wales website.
