SUMMARY:Motivational Interviewing
DESCRIPTION:This popular evidence-based approach has been around for nearly 30 years and been taken up by a wide range of practitioners in health and social care fields. It originated from work in the substance misuse field. Participants need to be prepared to come and work hard\, but have fun! \nTo book onto the course or for further information\, telephone: (029) 2052 9002 or email info@newlinkwales.org.uk or visit www.newlinkwales.org.uk

SUMMARY:Carnegie Challenge Debate: Is it All About Money?
DESCRIPTION:Is our well-being only about money? Would greater wealth solve all our problems? Or should we forget about cash and focus on relationships and emotions? \nThis debate features two exceptional speakers with diverging views: \n\nPeter Kelly is Director of the Poverty Alliance\, a ground-breaking Scottish charity which has done much to promote practical action on low incomes and disadvantage.  \nMichael Carrick is the driving force behind many of the UK’s infrastructure projects\, including the Circuit of Wales\, and was formerly Global Head of Merrill Lynch International. \n\nThe discussion is hosted by BBC Wales presenter Tomos Dafydd and will provide plenty of opportunities for audience contributions – it promises to be an informative and entertaining event. \nAttendance is free but advance booking is essential.  \nSponsored by the Carnegie UK Trust which supports public debates run by not-for-profit organisations in the UK and Ireland.

SUMMARY:Successful Adoption - Attachment & Post Adoption Support
DESCRIPTION:  \nAdoption services are being reorganised to achieve a cohesive service across Wales. Proposed improvements to assessment & matching of children to families is intended to reduce the amount of time that children have to wait in care & increase the numbers who can be successfully placed for adoption. Often children placed for adoption will have been born into families where parents are struggling with drug or alcohol misuse & many have experienced abuse or neglect in their first few months or years. As a result they frequently experience difficulties in attachment which can cause significant difficulties throughout childhood & in later life. Where this is the case children & their adoptive families may need on-going support to help rebuild\, promote & develop these critical bonds of attachment that will enable children to flourish emotionally\, socially\, physically\, mentally & developmentally. \nThis half-day event will examine current research\, policy & practice in Wales on what can be done to improve outcomes for adopted children. \n  \nDuring the morning delegates will have the opportunity to: \n\nIncrease their understanding of the impact of early abuse & neglect on attachment & the implications for adopted children\nRaise awareness of how poor support can have long term consequences for adopted children & their families\nConsider evidence & practice in post adoption support\n\n  \nWho should attend? – This event is aimed at those who plan & deliver services for children & families\, practitioners working with children & adolescents\, academics undertaking research into adoption\, attachment or neglect\, adoptive & foster parents\, & anyone with an interest in adoption &/or attachment. Attendance certificates can be issued to evidence CPD if needed. \n  \nCost – £45 (£30 unwaged) includes annual membership. \nAttendees receive automatic membership of ANW network for a year & are invited to participate in the AGM. Membership renewal is due in November for existing members. \nANW events are often oversubscribed\, early booking is advised. To reserve a place\, please contact Trish Rawlings at: trishrawlingsanw@hotmail.co.uk \n
