SUMMARY:Safeguarding Children Introductory (Level Two)
DESCRIPTION:Target group: \nStaff or volunteers from any agency from the statutory\, voluntary or commercial sectors\, working within Cardiff. \nIntroductory Training (Level Two)  \nTarget Group B: (those who work directly with children and/or parents) \nThis is refresher training for those who have attended Safeguarding Childrens training previously.  \nCourse Content: – ·The work of the Local Safeguarding Children Board – ·The four categories of abuse and neglect – ·Signs and indicators of abuse – examples would be given (including specific reference to child sexual exploitation\, human trafficking\, female genital mutilation\, forced marriage\, “honour”-based violence\, etc) – ·Risk factors for children associated with adult carers – to include domestic abuse\, substance / alcohol misuse\, mental health\, learning disability – ·s.47 Children Act 1989 – LA duty to investigate where there is “reasonable cause to suspect”\, other agencies’ duty to assist (where relevant for a particular employee group) – ·The individual’s personal responsibility to ensure that a referral is made – ·The referral process and the response to be expected (acknowledgement and feedback) – the process only\, not to include referral forms – ·The definition of significant harm – ·Exploration of s.17 and s.47 of the Children Act 1989 – ·Advice on dealing with disclosures from children – ·An opportunity to explore some of the signs and indicators of abuse either through consideration of the four categories or scenarios – ·The impact of abuse across the four categories – ·Obtaining consent for referrals – ·The limits to confidentiality – ·The importance of information sharing – ·How to make a referral – including the forms. – ·The referral process and the response to be expected (acknowledgement and feedback). – ·An overview of the child protection process \n Learning Outcomes: – ·Be aware of the functions of the Local Safeguarding Children Board; – ·Know the four categories of abuse and examples of indicators related to these categories; – ·Recognise the risk factors for children that may be associated with adult carers – ·Understand their role in protecting children\, and recognise their responsibility in ensuring that a referral has been made; and – ·Be aware of the Local Authority duty to investigate and other agencies’ duty to assist – ·Be aware of the referral process and the response to be expected – ·Be able to define the 4 categories of child abuse\, and will have explored signs and indicators across the categories of abuse; – ·Know how to respond when they think a child may be in need or suffering abuse\, including differences relating to consent; – ·Understand the importance of listening to children and how to deal with disclosures\, including recognising the limits to confidentiality; – ·Understand their role in protecting children\, and recognise their ongoing responsibility; – ·Have explored the need and reasons for information sharing; – ·Be aware of the child protection process\, how to make a referral and the relevant forms to use; and – ·Know how to access advice if unsure of what steps to take. \n Course facilitator: Dorian Davies\, Lead Training and Development Trainer \nIf you would like to make any bookings\, please email Cardiff Council at csbooking@cardiff.gov.uk Please provide your job title\, place of work\, contact number and email address.

DESCRIPTION:Changing the relationship between those who deliver and people who use services. \nThis free seminar is run by the Wales Audit Office\, Welsh Local Government Association\, Wales Council for Voluntary Action\, WPS 2025\, Public Health Wales\, Wales Cooperative Centre and Good Practice Wales.  \nMany public services are still delivered from the perspective of single service deliverers.  The leads to citizens experiencing multiple\, fragmented approaches that can result in:  \n – ·Contradictory and conflicting interventions; – ·Poor outcomes for the service user; and – ·A waste of valuable resources and poor value for money. \n  \nThis seminar will provide examples of how the relationship between those who deliver and people who use services has changed\, including examples of co-production and social enterprises. DESCRIPTION:A half-day Children in Wales course \nChildren are increasingly becoming regular users of internet connected devices from a very young age. A study ‘Children and parents: Media use and attitudes in the nations’\, published by Ofcom in 2012 reported that in each of the four nations over 80% of children aged 5-15 use the internet at home. Parents of children aged 5 -15 in Wales are more likely than the UK average to have concerns about content on the internet (25% vs. 17%) and smartphone ownership among 5 -15s has increased in all four nations since 2011.  Adults who care for and support young children\, and their parents often express a lack of confidence in using and managing access to the technology that the children take for granted. \n  \nThis course is aimed at anyone working with children under 8 years old and who wants to ensure that any access to new technology (computers\, tablets\, games consoles\, smart phones etc) is both safe and appropriate. It is particularly suitable for adults who are not IT specialists. \n  \nAims \nFor adults who work directly with younger children or with their parents to better understand the implications of internet use in this age group.  To explore concerns\, and to develop some practical methods to support safe use of a range of devises that are increasing becoming an integral part of the daily lives of young children. \n  \nLearning outcomes \nParticipants will: \n – Understand the ways in which children are able to access the internet – Consider both the risks and benefits of younger children using internet connected devices  – Understand the benefits and shortcomings of using parental controls on a variety of devices – Devised a set of ground rules for safe use of the internet and computers – Be able to support children to better protect themselves online – Identify warning signs to be aware of and how to report concerns  \nFind out more and book your place via the Children in Wales website.
