SUMMARY:Economic austerity and older volunteers
DESCRIPTION:In recent years the political\, economic and social climate in which volunteering by older adults occurs has changed significantly\, with the onset of an economic downturn\, concern about pensions\, a change in the public policy context for volunteering following a change of government\, and the abolition of default retirement age. The notion of ‘unretirement’ is being used to capture the new reality of older people. In this seminar\, seminar jointly organised by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC)\, Northumbria University and the Institute for Volunteering Research (IVR)\, the constraints and facilitators of volunteering amongst older people will be critically explored. Specifically: \n\nWhat constrains/enables older people to volunteer?\nHow does this impact on organisations that rely on older volunteers?\nHow does this impact on the social isolation of older people?\nAre organisations ready for what could be a considerable change in the supply and availability of older volunteers?\n\nTo register please complete this form. Registration for this seminar closes on 9 March 2015. \nIf you have any queries about this seminar please contact: \n\nJessica Collier Email: jessica.collier@esrc.ac.uk\n\nYou can follow the debate at this and other events in the series on twitter via the #volseminars hashtag. \nPlease note that due to limited spaces\, it is recommended that only one person from each organisation attends the event.

SUMMARY:Getting People Talking
DESCRIPTION:A Diverse Cymru one-day training course\nThis very practical course is intended to help people who facilitate meetings\, involvement events\, discussion or focus groups\, seminars or workshops to create the conditions that will enable people to contribute and find the whole experience rewarding. \nWhy attend? \nHave you ever left a meeting or event wishing more people had spoken up about an issue or concern? Various reasons can prevent people from doing so. As a facilitator you want all participants to feel that they were able to make a worthwhile contribution.  Very often more is required than just saying ‘feel free’ to speak up\, or saying ‘what do you think?’ \nThe course has lots of practical tips for how to encourage people to say what is on their minds. \nSimilarly some people are excluded from events (for example disabled people\, older people and people from ethnic minorities) because their different needs are not taken into account in how the meeting is run. \nThe course will give you lots of ideas about how to organise and run accessible and inclusive meetings in ways that enable all the people present to be involved\, so that meetings are more creative\, productive and enjoyable. \nFind out more and book your place via the Diverse Cymru website.
