DESCRIPTION:Half-day session run by Cardiff Council \nThere are two half-day sessions to choose from: \nMorning – 9.30am to 12.30pm \nAfternoon – 1.30pm to 4.30pm \n(Participants should aim to arrive up to 15 minutes before the session in order to register and avail themselves of refreshments). \nTarget group: Care assistants/support workers\, supervisors and managers working in social care. \nThe aim of this workshop based session is to set out the requirements of the deprivation of Liberty safeguards in adult social care. \nThe workshop will use case studies from social care to illustrate how the safeguards would apply in practice. \nObjectives \nAt the end of this workshop participants will be able to: \n\nOutline the background to the safeguards and why they are necessary in adult social care.\nRecall their duty to consult the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards code of practice\nList the key roles in the deprivation of liberty safeguards process\nIdentify service users who are at risk of being deprived of their liberty\nExplain the process of making an application for a standard authorisation\nDemonstrate when an application for an urgent authorisation must be made\nSet out the six requirements that need to be met for a deprivation of liberty to be authorised under the safeguards\nDescribe the action that can be taken should a service user subject to the safeguards leave the premises without permission\nHighlight the limits of a deprivation of liberty safeguard\nDescribe when a request for a review of an authorisation should be made\n\nState the conditions for ending a deprivation of liberty safeguard authorisation. \nCertificates will only be issued to participants who attend the full session.

DESCRIPTION:A one-day Children in Wales course \nThis introductory course will provide a comprehensive background to the key principles and intentions of the Social Services and Well-being (Wales) Act 2014\, whilst also focusing on the main policy issues and the impact upon children\, young people and their families. \nThe Act\, which came into force in April 2014\, will have a major impact upon all users of social services in Wales. The preamble to the Act describes its purpose as: \n‘An Act of the National Assembly for Wales to reform social services law; to make provision about improving the well-being outcomes for people who need care and support and carers who need support; to make provision about co-operation and partnership by public authorities with a view to improving the well-being of people; to make provision about complaints relating to social care and palliative care; and for connected purposes.’ [1 May 2014]\nThe programme will cover: \nMorning session  \n\nHistorical and policy background to the Act\nWhat is well-being?\nCitizen centred services\nThe outcomes framework\nSocial services functions\nThe changing role of the Third Sector and Social Enterprise\n\nAfternoon session  \n\nAssessing and meeting needs of children\, young people and their families\nLooked after and accommodated children and young people\nSafeguarding\nCo-operation and partnership\nAdvocacy\n\nThe course is aimed at anyone requiring knowledge of the intended changes planned under the new Act. The information will be of interest to those directly delivering services and also in terms of understanding the Welsh public policy evolving under the Act. \nAbout the Trainer \nMike Lewis qualified as a social worker in 1986. Between 1986 and 1995 he worked in Children’s Services\, specialising in working with looked after children and in child protection. He has held a number of management posts with Action for Children\, Save the Children and Children in Wales. Mike was CEO of the Welsh Refugee Council between 2007 and 2013 and now runs his own consultancy Hawliau. Hawliau focuses on ethics\, values and rights within public services. DESCRIPTION:This event is part of NIACE Cymru’s Festival of Dangerous Ideas\, which is encouraging people to come up with new ideas for promoting learning at all ages but with a focus on adult learning in Wales.  \nWe are delighted to announce\, that as part of the Festival\, we will be reviving the Annual Raymond Williams Memorial Lecture\, in partnership with the Open University in Wales. \nOn 24th February 2015\, Deputy Minister for Technology and Skills\, Julie James AM\, will host the lecture\, which will this year be delivered by Dr. Tom Schuller – author of Learning Through Life: The Inquiry into the Future of Lifelong Learning. Tom will offer his dangerous ideas on adult education\, and explore some of the ideas presented in the inquiry into lifelong learning\, asking were they dangerous enough and whether they are still relevant six years on. \nThe event will take place from 6.30pm at the National Museum for Wales’ stunning Reardon Smith Lecture Theatre\, with refreshments available at the reception event beforehand. \nPlaces are limited\, so book early to avoid disappointment. \nBook online

The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child states that all organisations concerned with children should work towards what’s best for each child. The Designated Person for Child Protection has a vital role within organisations helping to ensure that adequate safeguards are in place and that necessary action is taken when concerns about a child are raised. DESCRIPTION:The Institute of Enterprise and Entrepreneurs (IOEE) is working with the Government Equalities Office to run a UK wide road show of Meet a Mentor events designed specifically to support women business owners. \nMeet A Mentor is an event with a difference. You don’t attend to find a new client or supplier\, (although both are a possibility)\, you attend either as a mentor\, or to find a mentor who is willing to volunteer their time to support you and your business. As a mentor you’ll also receive free access to an online mentor training course. \nThe event is to support female entrepreneurs but mentors can be male or female. The events bring together volunteer mentors and new and growing businesses with the aim of developing fruitful and supportive mentoring relationships. DESCRIPTION:Are we serious about children’s rights?\nSponsored by Julie Morgan AM (Chair)\nThe physical punishment of children is the only form of inter-personal violence that remains legal in the UK. Forty-four states have already enacted legislation to change this. In 2002 the National Assembly and Welsh Government voted in favour of changing the law to give children equal protection. In 2008 the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child welcomed ‘the commitment of the National Assembly in Wales to prohibiting all corporal punishment in the home\, but notes that under the terms of devolution it is not possible for the Assembly to enact the necessary legislation.’ Despite these commitments\, extensive consultation and the ‘Rights Measure’ requiring Welsh Ministers to have due regard to the UNCRC\, now that Wales has the powers to do something there has been no progress. \nBut this can change …The Violence against Women\, Domestic Abuse and Sexual Violence (Wales) Bill is an appropriate opportunity to reform the law. This would not create a new criminal offence.
