SUMMARY:Arts Council of Wales Open Space event
DESCRIPTION:Do you love the arts? Do you feel audiences don’t get a voice? Do you feel like an outsider whose ideas are never taken seriously?Have you just started out and need support? Been in the profession for years and feel jaded? Is your community always left out of the discussions? Do you usually dread discussions and meetings? Are you looking to change things? Do you have a passion for the culture of Wales? Are you looking for stimulating debate? \nArts Council of Wales is running an Open Space event in Cardiff on 1 March. Open Space is not the usual form of public consultation meeting where people from the Arts Council talk at you – or where you turn up to talk about one thing and it’s never discussed. It’s a pioneering form of democratically-organised consultative meeting where you bring your ideas about where the arts in Wales should be heading and how we get there\, and are guaranteed to be able to discuss them. The day will be stimulating and inspiring – and it will allow you to really contribute to the process of creating a strategy for the arts. \nYou can register at http://celfcymru-artswales.eventbrite.co.uk/

SUMMARY:IWA Coffee Shop Debate @ Chapter - "More Welsh than the Welsh - an immigrant's view of Wales"
DESCRIPTION:Deciding to move your life to a foreign country (Peter can trace his English lineage back to 1600) simply because “you want to” is dangerous. Live life as an ex-pat and you might as well not bother; engross yourself into the culture and life of your new community and “you get the bother”. These immigrants often embrace earnestly – learning a new language\, researching the nation’s history more deeply than many of its citizens\, and arriving at strong views about what it should and shouldn’t be like. Invariably having a viewpoint\, and having a strong viewpoint\, can upset the natives. \n    In this debate Peter would like to explore why people like him often become energetic campaigners for aspects of their new lives – sometimes despairing of the seeming indifference of the locals; why some of us think that a tiny country many no nothing about\, and few – yes\, even its citizens – value; and why it should be a world force for good. And\, naturally\, be a great place to live. \n    Peter Cox is ‘retired’ from his management and training consultancy which he had moved from England to Cardiff: “It seemed like a good idea and led to making our lives deeply rooted here”. He occupies his days as a writer – both journalism and ‘creative stuff’; has returned to radio broadcasting after a 30-year hiatus; has been involved with the Welsh arts scene for two decades including as chair of Chapter Arts putting in place the redevelopment programme; is currently Vice-Chair Cardiff Civic Society (after two years as chair) and a member of the RSAW ‘brain trust’ “where I get to argue with brilliantly creative and interesting people about the built environment in Wales”. \n    He has many previous speaking appearances at Chapter itself: a series of lectures on Cardiff’s Public Art; Election Forums; and appearances at Ignite#5 and Petcha Kutcha.     \nFREE entry

SUMMARY:IWA Conference: The second wave in Welsh school improvement Educational policies beyond PISA 2013
DESCRIPTION:In association with WJEC \nThe PISA results that rank Welsh school performance against other OECD countries will be published in December 2013\, with the likelihood that Wales will still be slipping behind. Welsh performance in these tests has achieved a much higher profile in the past two years as a result of a series of speeches and policy interventions by Education Minister Leighton Andrews. What is the best way forward for achieving better school performance and higher attainment across the curriculum by Welsh students? What are the relative roles of schools and local authorities? How can the Welsh curriculum be better tuned to maximise attainment? How can the parents of poor performing students be more engaged with the education process? \nThis conference examines what we should be planning now to ensure enhanced performance in our secondary schools in the next three years. \n – £56 for IWA members – £70 for non-members – £90 for a conference place and 1 year’s IWA membership\, which includes unlimited digital access to all IWA publications \nFor a full conference programme please click on the following link http://www.iwa.org.uk/en/events/view/207 \nTickets can either be booked on our secure website or alternatively if you prefer to contact us directly please email
