SUMMARY:Economic austerity and older volunteers
DESCRIPTION:In recent years the political\, economic and social climate in which volunteering by older adults occurs has changed significantly\, with the onset of an economic downturn\, concern about pensions\, a change in the public policy context for volunteering following a change of government\, and the abolition of default retirement age. The notion of ‘unretirement’ is being used to capture the new reality of older people. In this seminar\, seminar jointly organised by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC)\, Northumbria University and the Institute for Volunteering Research (IVR)\, the constraints and facilitators of volunteering amongst older people will be critically explored. Specifically: \n\nWhat constrains/enables older people to volunteer?\nHow does this impact on organisations that rely on older volunteers?\nHow does this impact on the social isolation of older people?\nAre organisations ready for what could be a considerable change in the supply and availability of older volunteers?\n\nTo register please complete this form. Registration for this seminar closes on 9 March 2015. \nIf you have any queries about this seminar please contact: \n\nJessica Collier Email: jessica.collier@esrc.ac.uk\n\nYou can follow the debate at this and other events in the series on twitter via the #volseminars hashtag. \nPlease note that due to limited spaces\, it is recommended that only one person from each organisation attends the event.
