SUMMARY:E-Safety With the Under 8s
DESCRIPTION:A half-day Children in Wales course \nChildren are increasingly becoming regular users of internet connected devices from a very young age. A study ‘Children and parents: Media use and attitudes in the nations’\, published by Ofcom in 2012 reported that in each of the four nations over 80% of children aged 5-15 use the internet at home. Parents of children aged 5 -15 in Wales are more likely than the UK average to have concerns about content on the internet (25% vs. 17%) and smartphone ownership among 5 -15s has increased in all four nations since 2011.  Adults who care for and support young children\, and their parents often express a lack of confidence in using and managing access to the technology that the children take for granted. \n  \nThis course is aimed at anyone working with children under 8 years old and who wants to ensure that any access to new technology (computers\, tablets\, games consoles\, smart phones etc) is both safe and appropriate. It is particularly suitable for adults who are not IT specialists. \n  \nAims \nFor adults who work directly with younger children or with their parents to better understand the implications of internet use in this age group.  To explore concerns\, and to develop some practical methods to support safe use of a range of devises that are increasing becoming an integral part of the daily lives of young children. \n  \nLearning outcomes \nParticipants will: \n – Understand the ways in which children are able to access the internet – Consider both the risks and benefits of younger children using internet connected devices – Understand the benefits and shortcomings of using parental controls on a variety of devices – Devised a set of ground rules for safe use of the internet and computers – Be able to support children to better protect themselves online – Identify warning signs to be aware of and how to report concerns  \nFind out more and book your place via the Children in Wales website.

SUMMARY:Clinks masterclass on changes to the disclosure of criminal convictions
DESCRIPTION:The Rehabilitation of Offenders Act has changed for the first time in 40 years! If you provide information\, advice\, or employment-focused support to people with convictions\, or handle criminal records\, do you know how these changes impact on people with convictions? \nThis masterclass\, run by Unlock in partnership with Clinks\, will provide you with a greater understanding of how the criminal record and disclosure systems operate (and how they have changed) and the implications this has for people with convictions when seeking employment\, volunteer work and more broadly in moving on positively in their lives. This masterclass will cover: \n – Changes to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974\, which came into force on the 10th March 2014\, and how this effects what people with convictions have to disclose – How to work out whether convictions are ‘spent’ under the amendments to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 – If and how the new filtering process by the Disclosure and Barring Service changes what will be disclosed on a criminal record check – The different types of criminal record checks\, and how to make sure the right check is being done by an employer   \n“The disclosure training is engaging and comprehensive. Some of the legal aspects are quite complex and I would recommend anyone who works in this field to think about completing the Unlock training to ensure they are fully up to date”  Carrie Peters\, Director of REACH \nPrevious sessions have sold out\, so make sure you book early. \nFind out more and book your place here.
