SUMMARY:The Romani Cultural and Arts Company is pleased to invite you to the National Symposium
DESCRIPTION:The event is organised by the RCAC\, with the support of the Open Society Institute’s Early Childhood Programme\, Roma ‘Kopaçi’ projects. \nThe National Symposium is a development of the annual Gypsy\, Roma & Traveller History Month Workshop\, inaugurated by Dr Adrian Marsh in 2010\, that encourages members from Local Authority\, Central Government and GRT communities to discuss openly the challenges experienced in accessing services and provision. The previous annual workshops\, held in Newport\, have been aimed at promoting a better understanding and appreciation of the developments needed to establish improved social cohesion and integrate GRT communities for the greater good and have been led by Dr Marsh and Professor Thomas Acton in 2011 and then by the Romani Cultural & Arts Company since 2012. \nIn 2013\, the message has been extended to include the concerns regarding wider Romani communities across Europe and beyond. The situation in many countries in the European Union is a cause for profound concern\, as the recent report from the former Council of Europe’s Commissioner for Human Rights\, Thomas Hammerberg has noted. Beyond the borders of the EU\, the economic and social conditions for Roma and other Gypsy groups grow more grave day by day. Many of these communities are now present in the UK and Wales in particular and they seek better opportunities for improved quality of life and access to services. \nIn particular\, concerns to improve access to quality\, early childhood education and care services\, seen as the key mechanism to achieving long-term change for Romani peoples\, are at the heart of this year’s symposium. The main focus for this year is accommodation and the home and the associated issues relating to access to high quality support and services. There will be a number of important speakers coming from a wide range of organisations that promote and support Romani rights\, in addition to well-known academic experts in the field of Romani Studies\, policy and development.  \nSpeakers and workshop leaders will include a judge with experience of dealing with the GRT community\, Dr Margaret Greenfields\, a Slovakian early childhood expert and experienced representatives from the fields of policing and social work. All of these will bring a fresh look at the issues and support delegates in exploring potential solutions.Delegate numbers are limited so please book as soon as possible.

SUMMARY:Join in the Everyone’s Future celebration
DESCRIPTION:Everyone’s Future will celebrating the first year of its Big Lottery Funding at the Wales Millennium Centre on 23rd June 2013. \nEveryone’s Future is a partnership project between Age Concern Cardiff and The Vale of Glamorgan and Vibe Experience\, which aims to raise awareness of Age Discrimination and challenge negative stereotypes of older and younger people. Workshops have been delivered to nearly 2\,000 older and younger people across Cardiff and The Vale of Glamorgan using films to break down stereotypes. \nThe Age Equality Workers have gathered opinions and stories about how representation of ages have affected of people’s lives. The aim of the event is to champion all the good work that older and younger people do! \nThe groups will perform on the Glanfa Stage throughout the morning from show choirs\, to solo performers\, poetry and sketches\, it’s set to be an eclectic mix which will be fun for all the family. Information will be provided from the youth and older forums and age friendly activities will be available. There may also be some celebrity guests from hit ITV series Off Their Rockers and guest speaker Anna Buchanan\, Director of Protection\, Scrutiny and Human Rights has currently confirmed. \n    \nIf you’d like more information on the event or the Everyone’s Future project\, please contact Louise David on 01446 700622 or email louise@vibeexperience.com

Most people do.And it’s not surprising when they happen so often – around a third of over-65s and half of those over 80 will fall every year. But there are many simple things that older people can do to prevent falls\, and their potentially devastating consequences\, if only we can get the message across.” (Age UK website www.ageuk.org.uk ) \n

SUMMARY:Fathers must stand up for their daughters
DESCRIPTION:With Professor Laura McAllister\, IWA Trustee and Chair of Sport Wales. Jonathan Ford\, CEO of the Football Association of Wales and Charles Williams\, writer and broadcaster. To celebrate Father’s Day 2013\, IWA Women is holding a coffee shop debate aimed at fathers of daughters who want equality for their children. The event will look at the widespread inequalities faced by girls in society – from education to engineering\, science to sport\, and politics to parenthood. Evidence shows that a baby girl born in 2013 will have to wait until she is drawing her pension to expect any serious parity in representation for her sex amongst the corridors of power. There have only been 13 women MPs from Wales since the Acts of Union in the 16th Century (and seven of those were chosen through all-women shortlists). More girls drop out of sport than boys during their teenage years\, with half of Year 10 female pupils not enjoying PE in school-with all of the health\, educational and well-being issues this raises. Academically in school girls outperform boys\, but this is not reflected in University admissions. Is it time to get fathers on board to help push equality for their children? They invite some prominent fathers of daughters to join us in highlighting the injustices faced by girls in Welsh society. They ask whether championing gender equality needs a shove from men as well as women. To reserve your free place\, please email emmabrennan@iwa.org.uk or call 029 2066 0820.

SUMMARY:The Sounds of English: How to pronounce new words first time\, every time
DESCRIPTION:This event is part of Refugee Week Wales \nThis session introduces learners to the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). Many learners are unfamiliar with the IPA and may overlook phonetic transcriptions provided by their dictionaries when they are learning new words. Through the session\, learners are confronted with unfamiliar words and asked to attempt to say them accurately. The IPA is introduced and modelled and students begin to relate the phonetic symbols to their sounds. Subsequently\, the class are then given the same words that they attempted to pronounce at the start of the session\, but are able to say them with near perfect accuracy. The remainder of the lesson is aconsolidation exercise in the format of a competitive game show.
